Action to be carried out:

 Stop engines
 Call Master/Sound general emergency alarm
 Inform Engine room
 Check for injury to crew member/passenger
 Close watertight doors, if fitted
 Maintain a VHF watch on Channel 16 and, if appropriate, on Channel 13
 Broadcast an URGENCY message to ships in the vicinity
 Exhibit lights/shapes and make any appropriate sound signals
 Switch on deck lighting at night
 Change over to high sea suction in case of grounding
 Check hull for damage
 Sound bilges and tanks
 Visually inspect compartments, where possible
 Look for signs of pollution from likely fractured tanks
 Check condition of stability if vessel has suffered ingress of water
 Check machinery for damage
 Check tail shaft for oil loss
 Inspect all piping, valves and auxiliary equipment
 Obtain damage report from all departments
 Commence temporary repairs to reduce water ingress and start pumps in affected areas
 Sound around ship, especially around stern near propeller area
 Check for propeller damage (if possible)
 Determine which way deep water lies
 Determine the nature of the seabed
 Obtain information on local currents and tides, particularly details of the rise and fall of the tide
 Assess if vessel is likely to refloat at next high water
 Check weather forecasts
 Consider ballasting tanks to hold vessel in place/pounding
 Note course and speed at the time of grounding/stranding
 Note draught at the time of incident
 Assess if assistance is required (pilot, tugs etc)

 Make ship’s position available to radio room /GMDSS station, satellite terminal and other
automatic distress transmitters and up-date as necessary

 Broadcast DISTRESS ALERT and MESSAGE if the ship is in grave and imminent danger and
immediate assistance is required

Other actions:
 Company/Ship emergency response plan activated?
 Assess minimise pollution damage
 Notify coastal states and all other interested parties
 Enter facts in the Log Book
