 Broadcast URGENCY message to ships in the vicinity, if appropriate using appropriate GMDSS
equipment
 Continuous watch on VHF Ch. 16
 Fix position of the vessel
 Assess weather, current and drift
 Check/Monitor other vessels in the vicinity
 Check for navigational hazards in the vicinity
 Use light or sound signals if necessary
 Note time of breakdown, Reason for failure identified
 Establish if repairs are possible by ship’s staff and estimate time required
 If required determine if assistance required (tugs, salvage etc)
 Determine distance to port of refuge if required
 Spare parts required at next port
 Company informed
