Identifying Characteristics in Journals

There are many characteristics that are common within journals. It is important to look

out for these characteristics because it is crucial to the understanding of the journal.

One of the first things you should look out for is who wrote the journal. In the case of the

article “Validation of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale in a US College Samples,” the author's name

could be found below the title. The authors of this article are Catherine, A. Perz, Brent A. Lang,

and Rick Harrington. One can tell the article is peer-reviewed because it contains an abstract

which means someone read the work and summarized it.

The thesis of the article can be found in the abstract of the journal. Most of the

information supporting the article and its thesis could be located in the end of the text and in the

footnotes. This is crucial in reassuring in the audience who are college students and individuals

who are worried about COVID understand that the article is factual. The author then addresses

the issues by going into depth of the concerns of said audience.
