Q. I. A dual combustion cycle operates with a volumetric compression ratio of

· 12, and a cut-off ratio of 1.615. The maximum pressure is given by 54P1,
where P1 is the pressure before compression. Assuming indices of
compression and expansion to be· 1.35, _show that the mean effective
pres~ure of the cycle is (a) equal to I0P 1, (b) hence, find the temperature
at cardinal points with T1=335°K and also (c) find the cycle efficiency.

Q.2. A gas turbine plant draws in air at 1.013 bar, 10°c and has a pressure
ratio of 5.5. The maximum temperature in the cycle is lintlted to 750°c.
Compression is conducted in an un-cooled rotary compressor having an
isentropic efficiency of 82%, and expansion takes place in a turbine with
an 'isentropic efficiency of 85%. A heat exchanger-with an efficiency of
70% is fitted between the compressor outlet and combustion chamber.
For an air flow of 40kg/s, find (a) the overall cycle efficiency, (b) the
turbine output.
Q.3. Drive the expression of optimum pressure ratio for maximum net work
output in an ideal Brayton cycle. What is the corresponding cycle
efficiency?

K and n= 1.3.
Q.6. Find the heat flow rate through the composite wall as shown in the figure
below. Assume one ·dimensional flow and take, ka = 150W/m-deg, kb =
30W/m-deg, kc= 65W/m-deg, kd = S0W/m-deg.

Q. 7. Define emissivity of a surface. Explain spectral, directional, hemispherical

and total emissivity. How is Stefan-Boltzmann law derived from Plank's
law of thermal radiation? ·
