1. What is the meaning of verbal communication?
Answer: The word verbal means ‘relating to or in the form of words. When
communication takes place with the help of words (spoken or written), it is referred to
as verbal communication. Language plays a very important role in verbal
communication. Both the sender and the receiver use a mutually understandable
language such as English, Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, etc. to communicate with each other in
verbalcommunication.

2. How is verbal communication different from non-verbal communication?

Answer:
Verbal Communication: When communication takes place with the help of words, it is
referred to as verbal communication. In verbal communication, the sender composes
the message by arranging words in a structured and meaningful manner.
Non-verbal Communication: Non-verbal communication does not occur only through
words or verbal means. It also takes place through non-verbal means like facial
expressions, hand movements, appearance, body language, postures, gestures, etc.
When we see the sad face of our friend, communication takes place.

3. List down a few limitations of non-verbal communication.

Answer:
1. Non-verbal communication is quite vague and imprecise.
2. In non-verbal communication, long conversations and necessary explanations are not
possible.
3. Non-verbal communication is culturally influenced.
4. Sometimes nonverbal communication may become difficult to understand.
5. Since non-verbal communication uses gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, touch,

4. What is visual communication? Give two examples of visual communication.

Answer: Visual communication or graphic communication is the third most important
method of communication. It can be defined as the transmission of information and
ideas using signs, symbols, photographs, tables, images, drawings, videos and
animation. Any image that is used to communicate an idea, whether it is a poster,
drawing, photograph, graph, chart, a television advertisement, etc. can be included as a
mode of visual communication.

5. List two limitations of visual communication?

Answer: There are some limitations of visual communication.
1. Not cost effective: Creating and suing visuals like maps, charts, diagrams,
animation etc. requires tools and techniques that cost a lot of money.
2. Too brief: Complete and detailed information cannot be presented using this
method.
3. Limited scope: Every topic cannot be represented visually.
4. Difficult to understand: Visual tools such as graphs and map can be difficult to
understand.

6. What is para-language in non-verbal communication?

Answer: Para-language: Para-language refers to the nonverbal elements of the voice.
This includes vocal qualities such as pitch, rhythm, temp, resonance, control, pace and
the use of voice segregates such as “aah”, “um”, etc.
