Mock-up

First Trial:

This week I made my first mock-up of the bodice of my dress. I began by making the original
pattern that I had purchased to see how I liked the fit of it. After that I tried it on and made a
couple of changes to it and made a second one after that. I ended up adding a waistband piece
to change the design a bit and the fit of the top. To do this I had to trace the original pattern
and then create an additional two sections to the bottom. This was not easy as I had anticipated
and ended up doing two more mock-ups until I was finally happy with it. Some of the skills I
have had to use so far throughout this process is creativity, critical thinking, and perseverance.
These skills all come along with making your own design because I have needed to come up
with creative ways to use the pictures on Pinterest that I like to bring them to reality. Then I will
need perseverance and critical thinking the be able to get the sizing right problem solve
through as challenges that come up along the way.
Next Steps:

This took a lot longer than I had anticipated. Moving forward, next week I would like to have a
good start to the actual bodice part. Now that I have a new pattern created designed, I don’t
feel that I will be too hard to recreate. Although, I am using what is called boning (plastic piece
used to add shape and structure) as well as interfacing (thin layer of fabric meant to thicken it)
which are two new concepts to me. The boning will be added to the sides of the fabric all the
way up to my armpits to provide structure to the top, but I have never used it before so I may
need to rely on my textiles teacher to assist me or watch some YouTube videos to get a better
understanding of how it works. And for the interfacing it is different than other interfacing that
I’ve used in the fast because it is fusible, meaning it will be ironed onto my fabric and should
glue right on and stick to it.

I expect these next steps on my dress to be most nerve-racking because it is the first time, I will
be working with my fabric which is always worrying and stressful because I don’t want to make
any mistakes. In any project that I’ve done, making the first cut is always hard and because I
have never used this type of satin fabric before I expect it to be my most difficult project that I
have ever done. Even though I know so much thought has gone into the design I still get a bit
nervous.
