LITERATURE REVIEW

General Environment and its effects on Paradise Beverages

The general environment is any factor that disseminates issues that could challenge the functions
of a company. It is important to understand that the general environment is pivotal in modifying
the company's roles and responsibilities in relation to the factors that hinder any form of activity
undertaken by the company. In the year 2016, the country was struck by a destructive Category 5
tropical cyclone, Winston, which affected the company "Paradise Beverages" in all areas,
including its production, demand, and sales rate, which triggered a decrease in economic returns.
According to Mike Spencer, the general manager, natural events such as a cyclone can damage
most of the facilities in the breweries in Fiji and even in Apia, Samoa. Such events can lower
production for more than 7 weeks, and the company had to get back on its feet to be able to meet
the growing demand for beverages in Fiji.

Approaches to address General environment which affects company’s structure and

Performance

Amidst the global pandemic (COVID-19), which affected the company in many ways, it has
contributed negatively to the structure and performance of the company. When there was an
outbreak of the disease, there were numerous laws made in the country to help protect the
wellbeing of the people. This meant that hash decisions were required to be enforced for the
betterment of the people and to reduce the surge in COVID cases throughout the country. The
government of the day implemented a law that stated that all business operators should close
their operations for almost 3 months, which affected the performance and demand for beverages.
Similarly, another law that was implemented after 3 months was the reduction in hours of
operation and the reduction in number of employees, which caused terminations and layoffs for
some employees due to the lack of a CEO to run the company. In mid-2020, stakeholders also
regulated hygiene practices such as the compulsory wearing of masks and social distancing in
work environments, which affected the structure of leadership and the development of
performance that was required to meet the company's standards and expectations.

Influence of Culture in Leadership

Organizational structure is basically the founding values and principles that the company sets in
order to motivate and encourage its employees to achieve in the duration of their work. The
organization's culture would mean the spiritual encounters or cultural practices that embody the
company. For instance, Paradise Beverages is a company that is built upon the principle of
customer satisfaction and is driven to engage employees in social events that can build up
potential character and relationships. The company provides annual bonuses and events that
engage the employees and encourage them to actively participate in any event that promotes
leadership traits in employees. The company focuses on awarding "Employee of the Month" as
an initiative to encourage positivity and strategic efforts amongst them.

Strategies implemented to reduce the effects of Covid 19

Subsequently, COVID-19 has affected business operations in many parts of the country, and this
has been seen as a negative sign for the economic development of our country. The company has
implemented some key efforts to combat the pandemic and will continue to operate amidst it.
Firstly, "Health and Security" as a major concern for the company in ensuring that hygiene
practices are conducted in the work environment, which includes the wearing of masks, proper
sanitation, and social distancing. Another approach that Paradise Beverages has implemented is
the "communication and recovery plan." As the company grapples with COVID 19, it must have
a plan that engages with its suppliers and distributors on alternative ways to ensure that their
products are sold to people according to their needs and appropriating the rules and regulations
put up by the government.
