DIFFERENTIATE THE AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION

Aerobic Respiration

➢ the set of reactions occurring in the presence of oxygen, which breaks down food in order to generate energy in
the form of ATP
➢ it occurs in the cytoplasm as well as in the mitochondria
➢ Aerobic means “with air” or takes place in the presence of oxygen
➢ There are three stages pf Aerobic Respiration are:
• Glycolysis,
• The Krebs Cycle,
• Electron Transport Chain
➢ The chemical equation of aerobic respiration is as
given below:

𝐶6 𝐻12 𝑂6 + 6𝑂2 6𝐶𝑂2 + 6𝐻2 𝑂 + 2,900 kJ/mol

Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy

Anaerobic Respiration

➢ It is the set of reactions occurring in the absence of oxygen, which breaks down food into simple organic
compounds, generating energy in the form of ATP.
➢ It occurs in microorganisms like some bacteria, yeast, and parasitic worms.
➢ Generates 2 ATPs per glucose molecule
➢ The two main types of anaerobic respiration are:
• Ethanol Fermentation
• Lactic Acid Fermentation
➢ Chemical Reaction of Alcoholic Fermentation
𝐶6 𝐻12 𝑂6 2𝐶2 𝐻5 𝑂𝐻 + 2𝐶2 + 118 kJ/mol
➢ Chemical Reaction of Latic Acid Fermentation
𝐶6 𝐻12 𝑂6 2𝐶3 𝐻6 𝑂3 + 120 kJ/mol
