(c) Compute the interval of concavity and inflection points.
(d) Sketch the graph of 𝑓𝑓 𝑥𝑥 .

4. Compute the value of 𝑐𝑐 which satisfy with the conclusion of Rolle’s Theorem
for the given function and interval.
𝑓𝑓 𝑥𝑥 = 𝑥𝑥 3 − 4𝑥𝑥 2 + 3 on 0, 4 .

5. Compute the value of 𝑐𝑐 which satisfy with the conclusion of Mean Value
Theorem for the given function and interval.

6. Air is being pumped to a spherical balloon at a rate of 17 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐3 /𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚. Calculate the
rate at which the radius of the balloon is increasing when the diameter of the balloon is
22 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐.

7. A ladder of 10 m long has its upper end against a vertical wall and its lower end
on the horizontal ground. The lower end is slipping away from the wall at a
constant rate of 4 m/s as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1

Compute the rate at which the upper end of the ladder is slipping down the wall
when the lower end is 6 m from the wall.

8. A particle moves along x-axis so that the coordinate obeys the law of 𝑥𝑥 𝑡𝑡 = 𝑡𝑡 2 −
11
4𝑡𝑡 + 8, where 𝑥𝑥 is in meters and 𝑡𝑡 is in seconds.
(a) Find the particle’s velocity and acceleration.
(b) Compute the time 𝑡𝑡 when the velocity is zero.

9. A closed cylindrical container with radius 𝑟𝑟 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 and height ℎ 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 is to be made
to hold 600 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐3 of liquid.

SUGGESTED ANSWER [WEBEX 5]

1 Increasing :(−4, −2) , (5,7)

Decreasing :(−6, −4) , (−2,5)

2 Therefore, 𝑓𝑓 1 = 0 is the absolute maximum value and

𝑓𝑓 4 = −27 is the absolute minimum value.

3 𝑎𝑎 The critical points are (2, 18) and 4, 14 .

3(b) Critical point 2, 18 is a local maximum point.

Critical point 4, 14 is a local minimum point.
3(c) The interval of concavity: Concave up on (3, ∞). Concave down on
(−∞, 3). Inflection Point on (3,16).
3(d) Please email me your sketch to be checked.
