Chapter 7(Population of Ethiopia and the Horn)

Exercise One

Calculate the following

1. If country “A” has a total population of 69 million with a growth rate of 3% per year .What is the
doubling time (DT) for population?

2. The number of live births and mid-year population for place “Y” were 2020 and 400,000 respectively
find the crude birth rate (CBR)

3. The number of live birth in place “B” was 20,500 and its number of women aged 15-49 years was
826,000. Calculate the general fertility rate (GFR)

4. Calculate the total fertility rate (TFR) based on the data given bellows

Age group Birth in 2013 Female population in 2013

15-19 10,000 190,000
20-24 20,000 210,000
25-29 25,000 231,000
30-34 18,000 221,000
35-39 9,000 215,000
40-44 2,000 205,000
45-49 600 200,000

5. In “x” region in the total number of deaths observed in 2015 was 90,000 and total mid-year
population was 30 million. Calculate the crude death rate (CDR).

6. A total of 500,000 babies were born in a certain region in 2017. Of these new born 450,000 babies
survived their first year of life. Calculate the infant mortality rate (IMR)?

7. If the numbers of immigrants in country “A” were 60,000 and the total population in the same year
was 20 million, then calculate immigration rate (IR) the country.

8. In the year 2004 the number of emigrants in country “B” were 20,000 and its total population was 5
million, then what was the emigration rate (ER) of the country?

9. Suppose the number of emigrants and immigrants of country “Y”are 45,000 and 295,000,
respectively. If the total population is 100 million, What is the net migration rate (NMR) for country “Y”?

10. Suppose the birthrate (BR) and death rate (DR) of country “A” are 55/1000 and 28/1000,
respectively. What is the rate of natural increase (RNI) of the country?

11. If the RNI of country “B” is 6.5 /.and the NMR is 25/1000, find the population growth rate (PGR) for
the country.
Answer

1. DT =70_______ = 70
Growth rate 3
It means, population of country “A” will double within 23 years’ time and will reach 138 million
2. CBR = No. of live births X 1000
Mid – year population
= 2300 x 1000 = 5.75 births per 1000 per year
400,000
3. GFR = No of live births________ x 1000
No. of women age (15-49)
= 20,500 x 1000 = 24.8 per 1000 women per year
826,000
4. TFR = (EASBR) x 5
ASBR = Bx where Bx is the number of live birth to mothers of age x and px is the number of resident
Px women age x:
For example for the age group:
ASBR (15-19) = 10,000 X 1000 =52.6
190,000
ASBR (20-24) = 20,000 x 1000 = 95.2
210,000
Do the same to the rest of the age groups, next add all of your results and then multiply the sum by 5.
That is TFR. In other words, you have to use this formula : TFR = ( EASBR) x 5

Age Group Births in 2013 Female population in ASBR (live birth per
2013 1000 per ages
15-19 10,000 190,000 52.6
20-24 20,000 210,000 95.2
25-29 25,000 231,000 108.2
30-34 18,000 221,000 81.4
35-39 9000 215,000 41.9
40-44 2000 205,000 9.8
45-49 600 200,000 3.0
Total or  of ASBR = 392.1

TFR = 392.1 x 5 = 1,960.5 live births per 1000 female who live throughout their reproduction years
(2013)

5. CDR= 90,000 x 1000 = 3 = It means the death of 3 persons were observed for each 1000 people
30,000,000 1000
6. Death under age 1 = 500,000-450,000 = 50,000 babies
IMR = 50,000 x 1000 = 10 = It means , out of 1000 children born in the year 2017, about 10 infants
500,000 1000 died before celebrating their first year of life.
7. IR= No. of immigrants x 1000
Total population at destination
= 60,000 x 1000 = 3 = It means three immigrants for every 1000 people
20,000,000 1000
8. ER= No, of emigrants x 1000
Total population at origin
= 20,000 x 1000 = 4 = It means 4 emigrants for every 1000 people
5,000,000 1000
9. NMR= No.of immigrants-No of emigrants x 1000
Total population
= 295,000-45,000 x 1000
100,000,000
=2.5 = It means 2.5 per 1000 population
1000
10. RNI= BR-DR
= 55 - 28= 27 or 2.7 %
1000 1000 1000
11. PGR = BR – DR+ NMR

= RNI + NMR =6 .5% + 25 = 65 + 25= 90 or 9%

Exercise Two

12. Given Long-term immigrants and emigrants 3925 and 5330, respectively with a total population of,
640,000 of Zimbabwe in 1987. Calculate crude net-migration for Zimbabwe.

13. The total population of country “X” is 700,000. Out of this 400,000 are females. What is the sex ratio
CSR of the country?

14. If country “A” has 30,000 children, 60,000 adult and 6000 old age population. What is age
dependency ratio (ADR) of the country?

Answer;
12. Crude net migration = 3925-5330 x 1000 = 0.16 or 1.6%
8,640,000 1000
It means Zimbabwe lost 1.6 people per 100 by out migration by 1987
13. SR = male x 100 = 300,000 x 100 = 75 male
Female 400,000 100 female
14. ADR = Young + elderly x 100 = 36,000 x 100 = 60%
Adult 60,000
Exercise Three
15. If region “A” has crude density of 500 people per KM2 and its total area is 15,000 Km2.
What is the population of the region?
For question 16-20 refers the following demographic data of country “A”
Male population = 4.5 million
Female population = 5.5 million
Urban population = 60% of the total
Total live births = 30,000
Total area = 50,000 Km2
Cultivated area = 1/5 of the total
Net migration rate (NMR) =0
No .of infants who died below 1 year age = 1000
Women age 15-49 years =10,000
Population ages below 15 years = 45% of the total
Population ages above 64 years = 5% of the total

Calculate;

16. The doubling time of the country’s population

17. Infant mortality rate (IMR) of the country
18. The age dependency ratio (ADR)
19. Agricultural density of the country is:
20. The rate of natural increase (RNI):

Answer
15. The people of the region =500(CD) X15, 000(area) =75,000

16 DT= 70, GR =BR-DR, NMR = 0

GR
BR = Total birth x 1000 = 50,000 x 1000 = 5
Total pop. 10,000,000 1000
DR= Total death x 1000 = 30,000 x 1000 = 3
Total pop 10,000,000 1000
GR = 5 - 3 = 2 = 0.2 %
1000 1000 1000
17.
IMR = Total number of infants x 1000
Total live births
= 1000 x 1000 = 20
50,000 1000
18 ADR = Young + old x 100
Adult
Young (below 15 years age = 45 % of the total = 0.45 x 10,000,000
= 4,500,000
Old (above 64 years age = 5% of the total
= 0.05 x 10,000,000
= 500,000
ADR = 5,000,000 x 100 = 100%
5,000,000
19
Agricultural density (AD) = Rural population
Cultivated area
Rural population = Total pop - Urban pop
= 10,000,000- 60% (total pop )
= 10,000,000- (0.6 X 10,000,000)
= 10,000,000 – 6,000,000
= 4,000,000
AD = 4,000,000 , cultivated area = 1 of the total
Cultivated area 5
= 1 (50,000 Km2)
5
= 10,000 Km2
AD = 4,000,000 = 400P
10,000 km2 Km2
20.
The rate of natural increase (RNI)
RNI = BR – DR
BR = 50,000 x 1000 = 5 DR = 30,000 x 1000 = 3
10,000,000 1000 10,000,000 1000
RNI = 5 - 3 = 2 = 0.2 %
