Solution:
Vital indices that can be calculated from given information are – crude birth rate, crude death rate,
growth rate, infant mortality rate, maternal mortality rate.
=2152/300000 x 1000
= 7.17 deaths per 1000 mid year population.
Crude death rate of the given population is 7.17 deaths per 1000 mid year population
Solution:
Vital indices that can be calculated from given information are – crude birth rate, crude
death rate, growth rate, infant mortality rate, neonatal mortality rateand maternal
mortality rate.
Growth rate = CBR-CDR = 16.66- 8= 8.66 births per 1000 mid year population.
Neonatal mortality rate= number of deaths of children less than 28 days in a year x 1000
number of live births during the same year
= 40/2500 x1000 = 16 neonatal deaths / 1000 live births
Neonatal mortality rate of the given population is 19.99 neonatal deaths per 1000 live
births in that year.
Infant mortality rate= number of deaths of children less than 1 year in a year x 1000
number of live births during the same year
= 73/2500 x1000 = 29.2 infant deaths / 1000 live births
Infant mortality rate of the given population is 29.2 infant deaths per 1000 live births in
that year.
= 3/ 2500 x 100000
= 120 per 100000 live births.
Maternal mortality rate of the given population is 2.44 per 1000 live births in that year.
3) From the following vital indices, calculate the No. of live births, deaths, infant
and maternal deaths, that have occurred in the town, during the year 2023 .
a. Mid year population …… 70,000
b. Crude birth rate …… 30/1000 population
c. Crude death rate …… 15/1000 population
d. Infant mortality rate …… 70/1000 L.B.
e. Maternal mortality rate …… 6/1000 L B
Solution:
a) Number of live births-
Crude birth rate-= 30/ 1000 population
Mid year population = 70000
If, for 1000 population 30 births
For 70000 population ?births
So, By cross multiplication
total number of live births = 30 x 70000 = 2100 live births.
1000
Total number of live births in the given population for the year 2023 is 2100.
b) Number of deaths-
Crude death rate-= 15/ 1000 population
Mid year population = 70000
Solution:
Vital indices that can be calculated from the above information are crude death rate,
crude birth rate ,growth rate, infant mortality rate, TB specific death rate , maternal death
rate, still birth rate.
Growth rate = CBR-CDR = 10- 3.75= 6.25 births per 1000 mid year population.
Infant mortality rate=number of deaths of children less than 1 year in a year x 1000
number of live births during the same year
= 70/2000 x1000 = 35 infant deaths / 1000 live births
Infant mortality rate of the given population is 35 infant deaths per 1000 live births in that
year.

Number of live births during the same year in the same year
Still birth rate = fetal deaths weighing more than 1000 g at birth during that year x 1000
Total live + still births at birth during the year
= 65 x 1000 = 65 x 1000
2000+65 2065
= 31.48 per 1000 total births
Still birth rate in the year 2023 for the given population is 31.48 per 1000 total births.
