BEAUTY AT ANY COST!

Everyone wants to look good! Most women and even some men try to improve
their appearance by using cosmetics and hair coloring. You can even change
your eye color by wearing color contact lenses.

Another, more dramatic, way to change appearance is plastic surgery. Surgeons

can remove wrinkles, correct our body shape, shorten noses and even make lips
thicker. However, until recently, you could only dream of becoming ten
centimeters taller. Now Professor Ismailov gives people, who think they are
too short, the chance "to grow".

In his clinic in the small Russian town of Kurgan, Dr. Ismailov makes patients'
legs longer by using a special instrument after breaking their bones and moving
them apart. It is a very long and painful process, which may take up to eight
months.

People come to his clinic for different reasons. Some were born with certain
defects and can’t live a normal life without this operation. Others have
perfectly healthy legs but believe that the extra centimeters will help them in
their careers. Still others feel that this will help them find love or improve their
relationships.

In China there are three million people who want to be taller and believe it will
change their life for the better. Dr. Dzan Lin runs a clinic, similar to Dr.
Ismailov's, in Changsha, where people come to break their legs in order to get
longer ones.

Whatever their reasons, people are ready to suffer the pain of having their legs
broken, and being tied to a wheelchair for months.

LITTLE ANGELS

It is not easy to be a parent, but most of us know how to cope with our
children. However, in some families it seems that children control their parents
and the family’s life. In such families, children behave badly, scream or even
bite their parents! Children use any means to get what they want and their
parents usually give in.

When parents feel absolutely helpless, they turn to Tanya Newman’s Office to
get help. Tanya is an experienced child psychologist. She comes to people’s
homes to bring back peace and quiet to their families.

The first thing the psychologist asks parents to do is to make a video tape of a
regular day in the family and watch it. In many cases, just watching this film is
enough to improve the situation in the family, because many parents then
realize that they are not perfect and changes have to start with them.

With Tanya’s help, Carol and Steve Steward learned to ignore their son’s
nagging in the supermarket. Thanks to Tanya, ten-year-old Jessica, Mary
Corn's daughter, started eating healthy food and not only snacks and sweets as
before.

To control a child who doesn't want to obey, Tanya recommends leaving him
or her alone for several minutes. She also suggests giving children everyday
tasks and to praise them for good behavior.

Tina Williams, the single mom of 5-year-old twins, said that, thanks to Tanya,
she discovered that family life is not just hard work, fighting and arguing, but a
great pleasure.

LEFT-HANDED

Scientists can’t explain (when / where / why) about 20% of the world's
population is born left-handed. This means that the things most people

My name is Keren Stone and I live in Rosh Pina in the north of Israel.
Over the months of July and August, I usually pay about 120 shekels for my
water supply because I live alone. Although I have a small garden, I use very
little water. Imagine my surprise when, yesterday, I received a bill from my
local council for 650 shekels for water used during these summer months of
2006.
At the beginning of the war, on July 13th, I left my home and didn't return
until September 1st. I spent seven weeks away from home and, of course,
didn't use water from my home at all during that time. That's why I thought that
I would only pay half of my regular bill. I was surprised because I didn't
expect to pay five times more! Maybe the man who reads the meters didn't read
the numbers properly. Or, maybe they mixed up people's names and I received
someone else's bill.
I think that the local council should either give me back the extra money
they took, or let me use water for free during the next few months. I am writing
them a letter to ask for compensation.
