INTRODUCTION
1. General Information
This document provides all the specifications, principles of operation, and information
necessary to install an AMT-50 HGA Subsystem.
The AMT-50 HGA Subsystem is typically integrated into a complete ARINC 741 or 781 satellite
communication system. This document should be used in conjunction with the installation
manuals of the appropriate satellite communication equipment.
The information provided in this document serves as general guidelines only; it is not intended
to provide specific procedures for every type of installation.
Only qualified avionics personnel, knowledgeable about the technical and safety issues
related to the installation of communications equipment, should perform this type of
installation.
Note: GES and AES are the terms associated with Aero-I, Aero-h, and Aero-h+ services.
Satellite communication systems provide users with long-range voice and data communication
by accessing global satellite and ground communications networks.
Inmarsat is an international organization that operates and maintains the satellites and satellite
networks. Inmarsat operates multiple geostationary satellites. Each satellite is located over
an oceanic region; the current ocean region names and locations for I-3 satellites are:
• Atlantic Ocean Region-West (AORW), region 0 at 53.0W
All I-3 satellites provide worldwide telecommunication services for aviation, shipping, and
land-mobile terminal users. The satellites connect to ground telecommunication systems
through a network of GESs using their Global and Regional Beams.
In addition to the services offered by I-3 satellites, the I-4 satellites also provide worldwide
broadband service, SBB. Each I-4 satellite has 19 wide spot beams, 228 narrow spot beams,
and is capable of accommodating many separate, simultaneous SBB sessions. The SBB
service and I-4 satellites support broadband applications such as videoconferencing and video
streaming.
The satellite communication avionics (ARINC 741 and 781 systems), typically in conjunction
with the AMT-50 HGA Subsystem, act as an AES/MES. The combined system provides users
with a data and voice communications link to the satellite network and global
telecommunications system.
Figure 1-1 illustrates a simplified satellite communications system.

5. Advisories
The AMT-50 HGA Subsystem includes components that radiate RF and microwave emissions
(in the bandwidth of 1626.5 to 1660.5 MHz).
All service technicians and operators should be informed of the potential hazards of RF and
microwave radiation. When installing and servicing equipment, exercise the following safety
precautions:
1. Description of Equipment
The AMT-50 HGA is a high-gain antenna system that provides full, Inmarsat hemispherical
coverage. It supports Aero H/H+, Swift64, and SwiftBroadband services.
The AMT-50 HGA is compatible with all ARINC 741 compliant satellite communications
avionics and works with EMS SATCOM high-speed data terminals.
The AMT-50 HGA Subsystem consists of three Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) which are
described in the following sections: the AMT-50 HGA, the Diplexer/Low Noise Amplifier
(DLNA), and the Antenna Control Unit (ACU).
Note: Depending on the avionics system, a Type F DLNA may be required to meet Inmarsat
PIM requirements. EMS SATCOM recommends the installation of the Type F DLNA for
use with SBB services.
• Both straight (M85049/51 type) and right-angle (M85049/52 type) strain relief backshells
for each of the mating circular connectors
Note: The installer selects the connector type required based on the installation and
then discards unused backshells.
• Custom composite cables to connect the ACU-J2 to the Antenna-J1 and the DLNA-J4
Note: The composite cable is constructed in accordance with the requirements of the
AMT-50 HGA Interconnect Diagram 0811-B-0010 (refer to Figure 3-6) and
supports the fabrication of longer cable runs. This cable is available in several
lengths, as defined by the installation kit’s part number in Table 2-3.
3. Equipment Specifications

Introduction of this manual.
• 0811-A-0001 – ACU
3. Special Instructions
Follow the instructions below to ensure the proper installation of the AMT-50 HGA
components.
Note: All motor drive conductors shall be #20 AWG minimum. Unless otherwise specified, all
other interconnect wiring use a minimum wire size of #22 AWG.
1. Before installing any components or cabling, read all notes on drawings and read all
of the installation procedures.
2. Unless otherwise specified, use a minimum wire size of #22 AWG for all interconnect
wiring.
3. The installer must select the appropriate gauge of wire for power connections.
4. Route the +28 V dc supply to the ACU through an appropriately sized and labeled
circuit breaker.
If the AMT-50 HGA coax pigtail is secured with a clamp, wrap the cable with protective self-
fusing silicone tape (Indumar Fusion™ tape or equivalent) to an appropriate diameter.
4. Physical Placement
This section describes the physical placement options supported by the AMT-50 HGA
subsystem.
A. General Guidelines
When selecting an installation location for the physical placement of the AMT-50 HGA
System, refer to the following requirements:
1. Before installing the antenna system, accommodate the following connection
requirements:
Connect the antenna RF coax directly to the DLNA antenna port. If this is not possible,
a short, low-loss cable assembly can be obtained from EMS SATCOM. Contact EMS
SATCOM for more details.
2. Co-locate the Antenna Assembly and DLNA. The RF cable leading from the antenna
connects directly to the antenna port (J1) on the DLNA.
The ACU can be a maximum of 50 feet away from the Antenna Assembly.
3. Position the Antenna Assembly based on one of the three supported antenna
orientations as described in section Standard Antenna Orientation and Alternate
Antenna Orientations (reference Figure 3-2, Figure 3-2, or Figure 3-3).
4. Position the Antenna Assembly, as a minimum, such that it can be pointed in any
direction from 5° to 90° in elevation, and 360° in azimuth, and not be subject to
shadowing from any part of the aircraft structure.
5. Ensure that the area around the Antenna Assembly is free of any objects, which
might interfere with the antenna's moving mechanical parts and coaxial cable.
6. Mount the ACU flat with its cover facing upwards. The drain holes are located on the
bottom.
5. Configuration Strapping
Strap the ACU connector J2 configuration lines (within the connection cable) to define the
Antenna’s installation orientation. Table 3-1 defines the strapping options.
When the ACU powers-up, the Antenna orientation is derived based on the configuration
strapping.
Note: Do NOT strap both ACU-J2-A and ACU-J2-B to ACU-J2-I, as this is an unsupported
combination.
6. Bonding Requirements
1. Bond all LRUs to the airframe (0.02 ohms maximum).
2. Bond the ACU (A1) through the ground stud (optionally, through the enclosure
mounting tabs).
3. Bond the DLNA (A2) through the enclosure mounting tabs.
4. Bond the Antenna (A3) via J1 mating connector backshell.
7. Cooling Requirements
There are no special cooling requirements for the AMT-50 HGA.
8. Installation Procedure
This section provides detailed procedures and guidelines for the installation of an AMT-50
HGA Subsystem.
Table 3-2 provides the basic installation procedures specific to an AMT-50 HGA installation.

1. General Information
This section provides the information required to determine the operational readiness of the
unit and to aid service personnel in diagnosing system faults.
Before performing any of the testing and fault isolation procedures described in this section,
read all the advisories in the introduction of this manual.
Units usually require operational and diagnostic testing for one of the reasons listed below:
• Operational verification tests that verify the operational readiness of the unit before and
after installation on an aircraft.
• Fault verification and diagnostics to verify that a fault exists and produce system reports
for troubleshooting purposes.
• Operational verification of repairs that verify the operational readiness of units that have
been repaired before re-installation on an aircraft.
Only qualified technical personnel, familiar with avionics systems, should perform the test
procedures provided in this document. Before performing any test or fault isolation procedures,
read the safety advisories listed in “Introduction” on page 1-1.
3. Equipment Returns
For information on equipment return procedures, refer to the information provided in the
Appendix.
Note: To ensure the pitch is actually moving you may have to manually rotate the
element away from its initialized position:
• With the power off, rotate the large front gear assembly under the antenna,
pitching the element fore or aft.
• Re-apply power and observe the antenna motion as described above in
Step 1.
C. Test Setup
Before conducting the antenna tracking tests, complete the test setup procedure provided
in Table 4-3.
5. Built-In-Test (BITE)
The antenna subsystem contains built-in-test circuitry that reports the general health of the
subsystem to the SATCOM avionics via the ARINC 429 Bus. The test results may be monitored
and/or used for fault diagnosis by retrieving the data from the avionics LRU (refer to the
applicable manufacturer’s maintenance manual) or with a suitable ARINC 429
monitoring device.
The Antenna Subsystem transmits two ARINC 429 words to the SATCOM avionics LRU.
1. ACU/BSU Maintenance Word (Label 350), as shown in Table 4-7.
2. ACU/BSU Status Word (Label 144), as shown in Table 4-8.
The Maintenance Word contains the BITE information. The Status Word reports antenna gain
and selection status.

MAINTENANCE
The maintenance-free design of the AMT-50 HGA LRUs does not require field maintenance
to maintain airworthiness. Although the antenna design includes mechanical moving parts,
field lubrication is not required.
If functional problems occur, the AMT-50 HGA Built-in-Test (BITE) capability identifies the
faulty LRU. The ACU collates the BITE information and then passes the results on to the
SATCOM avionics. Reference the SATCOM avionics manufacturer’s documentation for
information on how to access the BITE information. In some avionics systems, a front-panel
display, accessed using a PC, provides diagnostic fault messages.
Maintenance for the AMT-50 HGA Subsystem is limited to replacement on verified failure.
After consultation with EMS Product Support, if replacement of the unit is deemed necessary,
refer to Appendix A for equipment return procedures.
All repairs must be performed at the EMS SATCOM Factory.
