INTRODUCTION

1. General Information
This document provides all the specifications, principles of operation, and information
necessary to install an AMT-50 HGA Subsystem.
The AMT-50 HGA Subsystem is typically integrated into a complete ARINC 741 or 781 satellite
communication system. This document should be used in conjunction with the installation
manuals of the appropriate satellite communication equipment.
The information provided in this document serves as general guidelines only; it is not intended
to provide specific procedures for every type of installation.
Only qualified avionics personnel, knowledgeable about the technical and safety issues
related to the installation of communications equipment, should perform this type of
installation.

2. Satellite Network Overview

This section provides a brief overview of the Inmarsat I-3/I-4 satellite communication system.
Satellite communication systems include global satellite networks, Ground Earth Stations
(GESs)/Land Earth Station (LESs), and Aeronautical Earth Stations (AESs)/Mobile Earth
Stations (MESs).

Note: GES and AES are the terms associated with Aero-I, Aero-h, and Aero-h+ services.

Satellite communication systems provide users with long-range voice and data communication
by accessing global satellite and ground communications networks.
Inmarsat is an international organization that operates and maintains the satellites and satellite
networks. Inmarsat operates multiple geostationary satellites. Each satellite is located over
an oceanic region; the current ocean region names and locations for I-3 satellites are:
• Atlantic Ocean Region-West (AORW), region 0 at 53.0W

• Atlantic Ocean Region-East (AORE), region 1 at 16.0W

• Pacific Ocean Region (POR), region 2 at 178.0E

• Indian Ocean Region (IOR), region 3 at 64.0E

All I-3 satellites provide worldwide telecommunication services for aviation, shipping, and
land-mobile terminal users. The satellites connect to ground telecommunication systems
through a network of GESs using their Global and Regional Beams.
In addition to the services offered by I-3 satellites, the I-4 satellites also provide worldwide
broadband service, SBB. Each I-4 satellite has 19 wide spot beams, 228 narrow spot beams,
and is capable of accommodating many separate, simultaneous SBB sessions. The SBB
service and I-4 satellites support broadband applications such as videoconferencing and video
streaming.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Description of Equipment
The AMT-50 HGA is a high-gain antenna system that provides full, Inmarsat hemispherical
coverage. It supports Aero H/H+, Swift64, and SwiftBroadband services.
The AMT-50 HGA is compatible with all ARINC 741 compliant satellite communications
avionics and works with EMS SATCOM high-speed data terminals.
The AMT-50 HGA Subsystem consists of three Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) which are
described in the following sections: the AMT-50 HGA, the Diplexer/Low Noise Amplifier
(DLNA), and the Antenna Control Unit (ACU).

Note: Depending on the avionics system, a Type F DLNA may be required to meet Inmarsat
PIM requirements. EMS SATCOM recommends the installation of the Type F DLNA for
use with SBB services.

A. AMT-50 HGA Antenna Assembly (0476-A-00377)

The antenna assembly transmits and receives signals to and from the satellite. This
single-helix, electro-mechanically-steered antenna element pivots within
a yoke.
Two stepper motors control the antenna-pointing vector. Motor “B1” provides pitch
movement of the antenna element within the yoke while motor “B2” provides roll
movement of the yoke assembly.
Hall-Effect Sensors provide absolute position information for the antenna (in both pitch
and roll), which feeds back to the ACU. Fault sensors signal a fault condition to the ACU.
Figure 2-1 illustrates the AMT-50 HGA assembly.

B. Diplexer/Low Noise Amplifier, Type A (0476-A-00364)

The ARINC 741 Type A DLNA provides the RF interface between the satellite
communication avionics and the antenna.
The Type A DLNA combines the receive and transmit RF signals into a single path to
interface to and from the AMT-50 HGA. On the transmit path, the DLNA filters the signal
from the satellite communication avionics High Power Amplifier (HPA) before combining
it with the receive path signal. On the receive path, the DLNA filters the receive signal
from the antenna before amplifying it with the LNA. The signal is then received by the
satellite communications avionics for demodulation.
Figure 2-2 illustrates the Type A DLNA.

Figure 2-2 Diplexer/low Noise Amplifier, Type A (0476-A-00364)

C. Diplexer/Low Noise Amplifier, Type F(1242-A-0006)

The ARINC 781 Type F DLNA provides the RF interface between the satellite
communications avionics and the antenna.
The Type F DLNA combines the receive and transmit RF signals into a single path for
interface to and from the AMT-50 HGA. On the transmit path, the DLNA filters the signal
from the satellite communications avionics High Power Amplifier (HPA) before combining
it with the receive path signal. On the receive path, the DLNA filters the receive signal
from the antenna before amplifying it with the LNA. The signal is then received by the
satellite communications avionics for demodulation.
The AMT-50 HGA is provided with either the Type A or the Type F DLNA. For systems
that use SBB services, EMS SATCOM recommends the Type F DLNA.

D. Antenna Control Unit (0811-A-0001)

The ACU provides the AMT-50 HGA interface to the aircraft power supply and distributes
the power to itself, the antenna assembly, and the DLNA.
The ACU provides the control interface between the AMT-50 HGA and the satellite
communications avionics. The ACU translates the ARINC 741 antenna-pointing vectors
received from the SDU or HSD over an ARINC 429 multi-control data bus into motor drive
signals (pitch and roll) to steer the antenna.
The ACU receives DLNA control signals from the satellite communications avionics over
the same bus and translates this information into appropriate “ON/OFF” signals on the
discrete interface connections between the SDU and the DLNA.
The ACU has Built-in-Test Equipment (BITE) for the entire AMT-50 HGA assembly (ACU,
DLNA, and antenna assembly) that reports the AMT-50 HGA status back to the satellite
communications avionics.
Other functionality of the ACU includes factory diagnostic and setup capabilities.

9. Interconnection Losses

A. Transmit (Tx) Losses

The maximum coaxial cable loss from the HPA to the DLNA must not exceed 1.3 dB.
The VSWR of the transmit cable should not exceed 1.5:1.
This is a generic figure to cover all aircraft types and equipment configurations.
Depending on specific installation environments, the Tx insertion loss may be increased
without compromising system performance or invalidating system certification. If
required, contact EMS Technologies for more information.

B. Receive (Rx) Losses

The insertion loss for the Rx coaxial cable between the DLNA and the satellite
communications avionics must be in the range of 6 dB to 25 dB as per ARINC 741
specifications. The VSWR of the receive coaxial cable should not exceed 1.5:1.

Introduction of this manual.

2. Unpacking and Inspecting Equipment

Unpack the equipment components from the shipping container. Visually inspect the units for
any shipping damage. Verify that all three components of the AMT-50 HGA are included.
Identify each of the three components by their part numbers:
• 0476-A-00377 – Antenna Assembly

• 1242-A-0006 or 0476-A-00364 – DLNA

• 0811-A-0001 – ACU

3. Special Instructions
Follow the instructions below to ensure the proper installation of the AMT-50 HGA
components.

Note: All motor drive conductors shall be #20 AWG minimum. Unless otherwise specified, all
other interconnect wiring use a minimum wire size of #22 AWG.

1. Before installing any components or cabling, read all notes on drawings and read all
of the installation procedures.
2. Unless otherwise specified, use a minimum wire size of #22 AWG for all interconnect
wiring.
3. The installer must select the appropriate gauge of wire for power connections.
4. Route the +28 V dc supply to the ACU through an appropriately sized and labeled
circuit breaker.
If the AMT-50 HGA coax pigtail is secured with a clamp, wrap the cable with protective self-
fusing silicone tape (Indumar Fusion™ tape or equivalent) to an appropriate diameter.

eNfusion™ AMT-50 HGA (High-gain Antenna) Subsystem

A. General Guidelines
When selecting an installation location for the physical placement of the AMT-50 HGA
System, refer to the following requirements:
1. Before installing the antenna system, accommodate the following connection
requirements:
Connect the antenna RF coax directly to the DLNA antenna port. If this is not possible,
a short, low-loss cable assembly can be obtained from EMS SATCOM. Contact EMS
SATCOM for more details.
2. Co-locate the Antenna Assembly and DLNA. The RF cable leading from the antenna
connects directly to the antenna port (J1) on the DLNA.
The ACU can be a maximum of 50 feet away from the Antenna Assembly.
3. Position the Antenna Assembly based on one of the three supported antenna
orientations as described in section Standard Antenna Orientation and Alternate
Antenna Orientations (reference Figure 3-2, Figure 3-2, or Figure 3-3).
4. Position the Antenna Assembly, as a minimum, such that it can be pointed in any
direction from 5° to 90° in elevation, and 360° in azimuth, and not be subject to
shadowing from any part of the aircraft structure.
5. Ensure that the area around the Antenna Assembly is free of any objects, which
might interfere with the antenna's moving mechanical parts and coaxial cable.
6. Mount the ACU flat with its cover facing upwards. The drain holes are located on the
bottom.

B. Standard Antenna Orientation

The standard AMT-50 HGA orientation is shown in Figure 3-1.
In a Standard Orientation, the principle axes of the antenna are aligned (nominally) with
the aircraft’s principle axis. The RF coaxial cable and Connector J1 point towards the
AFT of the aircraft.
This antenna configuration is supported by all versions of ACU software (including
software versions earlier than 4.00).

C. Alternate Antenna Orientations

Two alternate antenna orientations are supported by AMT-50 HGA Subsystems with ACU
software version 4.00 or later.
These two placement options are described in section Antenna Orientation – Pitched 4°
Down and Antenna Orientation – J1 Pointing to the FRONT of the Aircraft.

(1) Antenna Orientation – Pitched 4° Down

The Antenna can be installed with the antenna’s longitudinal principle axis pitched 4°
down relative to the longitudinal aircraft principle axis as shown in Figure 3-2.
As in a Standard Orientation, the antenna connector J1 and the RF coax cable point
towards the AFT of the aircraft.
To support this configuration, the ACU-J2 connector must be strapped as defined in
Table 3-1.

(2) Antenna Orientation – J1 Pointing to the FRONT of the Aircraft

This placement option installs the Antenna with the Connector J1 and RF coax cable
pointing towards the FRONT of the aircraft as shown in Figure 3-3. The principle
axes of the antenna are (nominally) aligned with the aircraft’s principle axis.
This orientation is rotated 180° about the YAW axis relative to the Standard Antenna
Orientation.
To support this configuration, the ACU-J2 connector must be strapped as defined in
Table 3-1.

5. Built-In-Test (BITE)
The antenna subsystem contains built-in-test circuitry that reports the general health of the
subsystem to the SATCOM avionics via the ARINC 429 Bus. The test results may be monitored
and/or used for fault diagnosis by retrieving the data from the avionics LRU (refer to the
applicable manufacturer’s maintenance manual) or with a suitable ARINC 429
monitoring device.
The Antenna Subsystem transmits two ARINC 429 words to the SATCOM avionics LRU.
1. ACU/BSU Maintenance Word (Label 350), as shown in Table 4-7.
2. ACU/BSU Status Word (Label 144), as shown in Table 4-8.
The Maintenance Word contains the BITE information. The Status Word reports antenna gain
and selection status.

6. ARINC 429 Label 350 (Maintenance Word)

The ARINC 429 maintenance word Label 35 reports the general “health” of the antenna
subsystem via the ARINC Bus, from the ACU to the avionics. Only four bits are assigned to
the subsystem:
• Bit 11—reserved for HGA: When set, indicates an antenna failure. If the failure is
momentary, it is probably caused by an antenna slippage or binding on some obstruction.
If failure is constant, either the antenna is damaged or it has no power.

• Bit 13—Control Bus input: When set, indicates there is no activity on the ARINC 429 Bus
to the ACU.

• Bit 18—Internal ACU parameter: When set, indicates a failure of the ACU internal start-
up test.

• Bit 20—DLNA: When set, indicates the DLNA has failed or there is no power tothe unit.

MAINTENANCE
The maintenance-free design of the AMT-50 HGA LRUs does not require field maintenance
to maintain airworthiness. Although the antenna design includes mechanical moving parts,
field lubrication is not required.
If functional problems occur, the AMT-50 HGA Built-in-Test (BITE) capability identifies the
faulty LRU. The ACU collates the BITE information and then passes the results on to the
SATCOM avionics. Reference the SATCOM avionics manufacturer’s documentation for
information on how to access the BITE information. In some avionics systems, a front-panel
display, accessed using a PC, provides diagnostic fault messages.
Maintenance for the AMT-50 HGA Subsystem is limited to replacement on verified failure.
After consultation with EMS Product Support, if replacement of the unit is deemed necessary,
refer to Appendix A for equipment return procedures.
All repairs must be performed at the EMS SATCOM Factory.
