While we are in full swing with the season of Branch Annual General Meetings, where new Members

are elected to serve on the Branch Executive Committees, who will also potentially stand to serve on
the National Executive Committee, we though to the remind you of the important role that Branch
Executive Members play, and perhaps encourage you to join a committee in your region!

Since the inception of the organization A number of volunteers, in their capacity of Branch Executive
Committee members and the National Executive Committee members, have remained the backbone
of the Institute. Through their active participation and involvement, the Institute has been able to
deliver its mission and initiatives over the years.

We spoke to Stanton Alberts, a member of SAIV for more than 10 years, with 4 of those, serving on
the Branch Executive Committee and 3 on the National Executive committee. “I was drawn to the
committee to provide a service, and to make a difference in the valuation industry” he says. “So far,
upskilling young entrants into the profession has been the most fulfilling aspect of the role.”

Dianne de Wet, SAIV Vice President, KZN Branch Chairperson, and a member for over 13 years says
that giving back to the community, professional and personally, has always been a way to serve
fellow valuers in a positive way. “I have found that the relationships formed over the years are the
most fulfilling aspect of being on the Branch Committee.  Being able to make a contribution in
however small a way is the most fulfilling aspect of being a committee member, together with the
wonderful relationships that have been formed over the years with my colleagues in the profession”
she adds.

Not only is it an opportunity to give back, form new networks, but it’s also an opportunity to learn
new skills whilst imparting knowledge and skills that one already has. To join the various Branch
committees of the organization, one has to be enthusiastic, passionate about the profession, good
leadership skills, a positive attitude and willing to volunteer without expecting anything in return
(except personal satisfaction). You will make a positive contribution to your branch committee. In
addition to these qualities, Patrick O’Connell emphasizes that commitment is key when joining the
Branch Executive. “Being connected in the property industry is helpful, whilst a good business mind
is an imperative. Being willing to contribute time and effort is also a necessity.”

O’Connell is a Past-President and a member for 21 years. “I have the privilege of being in the
company of excellent people of high ethical standards, with a common goal to grow the profession.
More recently, I have been part of the birth of the SAIV Mentorship Programme which is yielding
good results nationally.”

Through the varying type of skills that each member brings, the Institute has remained relevant and
the property valuation voluntary association of choice for more than half of the registered persons in
the country. There is still a lot that needs to be done within the profession as well as within the
organization and its projects. More time needs to be spent on training and practical education of
young aspiring Valuers. Education is paramount and does not end after graduation.  It is a lifelong
journey.

Need people to assist with being the drivers of this change.
