TUTORIAL –PITOT TUBES, VENTURIMETER, PIPE FLOW
25TH APRIL 2023
Question 1

A pitot tube is inserted in a pipe of 300 mm diameter. The static pressure in the pipe is 100 mm of
mercury. The stagnation pressure at the centre of the pipe recorded by The Pitot tube is 0.981 N/cm2.
Calculate the rate of flow of water through the pipe if the mean velocity of flow is 0.85 times the central
velocity. Take CV equals to 0.98.

Question 2

A pipe of diameter 350 mm and length 75m has water flowing at a velocity of 2.8 m/s, find the head loss
due to friction using the Darcy Weisbach formula. Assume kinematic viscosity of water is 0.012 stoke(
note 1poise=0.1 Ns/m2, 1 stoke=1x 10 -4 m2/s)

Question 3

215 litres of gasoline of specific gravity 0.8 flows per second through an inclined Venturi metre fitted to
a 300mm diameter pipe. The Venturi metre is inclined at an angle of 60° to the vertical and its 150 mm
diameter throat is1.2 m from the entrance along its length and the pressure at the throat is 0.077
N/millimetre square. Calculate the coefficient of discharge
