Comparative form

Use the comparative to compare two or more: people, places,


animals, and things.

Rule: 1
- Add –er to the monosyllable adjectives.
Examples:
1. tall = taller
2. fast = faster
3. short = shorter
1. Juan is taller than Martin.
2. My car is faster than Maria’s.
3. Hanna is shorter than Sofia.
Rule 2
Add than after the adjective.
Example
Damary is richer than Brayan.
Rule 3
Add more before the adjectives that have two or more
syllables.
Expensive = more expensive
Beautiful = more beautiful
Important = more important

Examples
Her jacket is more expensive than her shoes.
Maria is more beautiful than Ana.
Love is more important than money.

Rule 4
If the adjective ends in c-v-c, double the last consonant and
add –er.
Consonant-Vowel-Consonant C-V-C
Big Bigger Hot hotter
Slim Slimmer Thin Thinner
Flat Flatter Fat fatter

Examples.
1. This car is bigger than that one.
2. Sofia is thinner than Gimena.
3. You are fatter than Michael.

Rule 5
If the adjective ends in –y, change the –y to –ier.
Happy = happier
Example:
1. Paulito is happier than Marcos.
2. Juan is angrier than Carlos.
3. These boxes are heavier than yours.

Rule 6
The next adjectives form the comparative and superlative in
an irregular form.
