Gender Based Violence

Recently there have been a lot of gender wars, people deciding who is more superior,
what gender is more important in society etc. In my opinion we all need each other but my
opinion is not the same as everyone, there are still some people who like to express their
“masculinity” through violence. We all know it, we have heard of it, or have seen it on the news
or social media gender based violence, it is something that happens to both men and women
but unfortunately women are more prone to be victims in such acts.

I am grateful to say that I have not experienced anything like this but still, I find this topic really
important. It’s important to me for many reasons but the main reason is I choose to advocate for
women as much as I can. I am not ashamed to admit that I am a feminist, to me a feminist is
someone who speaks for women's rights and uses their voice or platform to speak for what is
right. As of now I am educating myself to the best of my ability and speaking to others about it. I
have learned that the best way to implement change is to talk about it. Inform others, get people
involved and I am trying to do that by presenting (if given the chance to speak about a topic),
conversations, and class discussions. Therefore gender based violence is an important issue to
me because such violent acts undermine a person's sense of self-worth and self-esteem and
infringes on their human rights (which is against everything I believe in).

As I mentioned I have not been directly impacted by this issue but that doesn’t mean I am not
affected by it. Currently I am taking law as a course and a recent case study that I have done
talks about gender based violence and I was taken aback. It’s hard to disconnect yourself from
these things and look at them through a professional or academic lens because at the end of
the day I am human, and at times providing an emotional response is something that does
happen. The way that this affects me is emotionally, it hurts to know that there are women out
there that have to face this or have been through it.

Working towards the future is something that everyone does. In terms of gender based violence
I think people need to be more educated, and have more conversations regarding this because
in order for any change to occur it is important to make people aware of the situation.
