COMMUNICATION SKILLS RADIO LECTURES ON 29TH JANUARY,

2021.

Communication is the interaction between a source and receiver(s) through a


medium to share meanings.

Receptive skills are the language skills used to receive information.

Eg. Listening and Reading

Productive skills are the language skills used to give and produce information

Eg. Speaking and Writing Skills.

A communication is an ongoing process or an activity and it is the sharing of


meanings.

Elements that aid us in communication

1. Source - the person who initiates the communication process by putting up his
or her message.

2. Message/ Information - is what you want to release to the other person

3. A medium/ A channel - is the pathway through which messages are sent


through

4. Receiver - the person who gets the information or takes the information or
decodes the message.

5. Feedback / Response - It is the behavior the receiver exhibit after receiving the
information. The feedback is what helps the receiver to evaluate to see what ever
meaning has been shared.

Feedback can be verbal or non-verbal.

An intended feedback is the expected feedback.

An unintended feedback is an unexpected feedback.

Forms of Communication.

We have two forms of Communication

1. Verbal communication is the communication through the use of words


(languages). It can be spoken or the written form.

2. Non-verbal communication is the communication without the use of


languages. Eg. Using gestures, body and sign languages etc.

Forms of Non-verbal communication

1. The use of time ( Chronemics)

2. The use of space or distance ( Proxemics) -Greeting a teacher from a far,


speaking with your parents from afar.

3. The use of body movement ( Kinesics) - Frown on your face

4. Using the eye movement ( Oculesics ) - Smiling with the eye, keeping your eye
down when talking

5. The use of touch (Haptics ) - Handshake, A wrap at the back, Hug

6. The use of vocal lips ( Vocalics ) - Coughs, Clearing throat, yawn

7. The use of things around us ( Objective ) -When people wear red, or when we
dress, rings on the finger

Types of Communication

1. Intrapersonal Communication is the communication that takes place within


one's self.

Egs. Meditation, Soliloquy


2. Interpersonal Communication is the communication that takes place between
two or more people. We have 2 type

i. Strictly between two people - Dyatic Communication

ii. A conversation between about 3 to 7 indivials - Small group Communication

3. Public Communication is a communication from one single source to a large


number of receivers. Eg, a lecturer and students in class, the church.

4. Mass Communication is a communication from a single source to a large


number of unseen objects or receivers through the use of a medium. Eg, Radio
lectures

Mono linear is a communication coming from a single source but the receiver has
no opportunity to give a feedback.

Bilinear is a two way conversation

Multilinear is a communication with many people engaged in the conversation.

BARRIERS/ IMPEDANCE OF COMMUNICATION

1. Physical Barriers - This refers to things in the environment that hinder the
source to send information and the receiver to receive information. Eg. Making
call at a noisy place and teacher teaching at a sporty place

2. Psychological or Emotional Barrier - This is how the emotional state of the


person affects how the receiver accepts information

3. Language/ Linguistic Barrier - Differences in the language used in


Communication causes a problem in conversation and the choice of words
( proverbs and other languages).

4. Grammatical errors - This changes the knowledge of the message and makes it
hard to comprehend.

5. Transmission problems - Battery levels, internet etc

6. Negative attitudes towards something hinders effective communication
