by presenting pieces of evidence to convince the community folks.

of the Moon. S5FE - IVg - h - 7
Values Integration: Appreciating God’s creation.

II. CONTENT: PHASES OF THE MOON (Day 1)

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References: SCIENCE BEYOND BORDERS 5
B. Learner’s Materials : Worksheets, Charts, Real Objects
C. Other Learning Resources: Video presentation, activity sheets

IV. PROCEDURE

Review of the previous lesson.

(ENGAGE)
1. Observing/studying the calendar showing the different phases of the moon.
Show the class a calendar with the different phases of the moon.
Ask/Say :
 Have you ever wondered how/why we see the moon in different shapes during the night and how lucky
we are that we are seeing this creation of God?
 Why do you think this pictures of the moon are in the calendar?
 How often do you see the moon at night?
 How do you feel when there is no moon at night time?
 What does each phase of the moon tell us? Have you heard of some old beliefs “pamahiin” regarding
the different phases of the moon? Discus/elaborate.

(EXPLORE)
Call on volunteers (2 pupils at a time) to pick one strip of paper with a brief description of the moon,
read and post it on the board, afterwards tell them to get the picture of the moon (prepared earlier by the
teacher)that they think suits the description then post beside the strip of paper.
Do the same for the rest of the phases of the moon. Talk about their work/activity.
Introduce the lesson to the class.
(EXPLAIN)
The teacher presents/shows/explains the different phases of the moon with the help of a video clip
https://youtu.be/BQvo7vyCmuE.

(Always remind pupils of the standards they need to follow during video presentation.)

 NEW MOON is when the moon cannot be seen because we are looking at the unlit half of the Moon.
The new moon phase occurs when the Moon is directly between the Earth and Sun. A solar
eclipse can only happen at new moon.
 WAXING CRESCENT MOON is when the Moon looks like a crescent and the crescent increases
("waxes") in size from one day to the next. This phase is usually only seen in the west.
 FIRST QUARTER MOON (or a half moon) is when half of the lit portion of the Moon is visible after
the waxing crescent phase. It comes a week after new moon.
 WAXING GIBBOUS MOON occurs when more than half of the lit portion of the Moon can be seen and
the shape increases ("waxes") in size from one day to the next. The waxing gibbous phase occurs
between the first quarter and full moon phases.
 FULL MOON is when we can see the entire lit portion of the Moon. The full moon phase occurs when
the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, called opposition. A lunar eclipse can only
happen at full moon.
 WANING GIBBOUS MOON occurs when more than half of the lit portion of the Moon can be seen and
the shape decreases ("wanes") in size from one day to the next. The waning gibbous phase occurs
between the full moon and third quarter phases.
 LAST QUARTER MOON (or a half moon) is when half of the lit portion of the Moon is visible after
the waning gibbous phase.
 WANING CRESCENT MOON is when the Moon looks like a crescent and the crescent decreases
("wanes") in size from one day to the next.

(ELABORATE)
For better understanding of how the different phases of the moon is formed engage the class in
performing the pre identified activity using the globe, small ball and a flashlight.

The class will be divided into two groups to perform the activity. A leader will be assigned for each
group.

(Remind the class the importance of working cooperatively during group activities)

Before the activity let the pupils take note of the following guide questions :
- What portion of the ball reflects light?
- Does it change its shape?
- What made it change its shape?

To facilitate the forming of generalization and abstraction of the lesson ask:

What are the different phases of the moon?

Then call on pupils to complete the texts below.
 When the moon is between the sun and earth, we cannot see it because the sun shines on the
side of the moon away from the earth. This phase is called new moon.
 After one or two days, we see a small edge of the moon lighted, and this is called waxing
crescent moon.
 After about a week, half of the moon is lighted. This phase is called the first quarter.
 After a few days, we see more than half of the moon lighted. This is called the waxing gibbous
moon.
 After one week the whole side of the moon facing the earth becomes lighted. This happens
when the earth is between the sun and the moon. This phase is called the full moon.
 After a day or two the lighted part becomes less and we see a waning gibbous moon.
 After a week we see only half of the moon’s face called the last quarter.
 Then after a day or two, the lighted part becomes smaller forming a waning crescent moon.

 After one week we do not see the moon at all, this means that the moon will undergo its
different phases again.

(EVALUATE)
Match the item in Column A with the items in Column B. Write the letter of the correct answer on the
space provided.
Column A Column B

______1. The phase seen when the moon is between the sun a. month
and earth.
______2. The phase when most of the lighted portion of the moon b. waxing crescent
is visible in the night sky and seen before a full moon.
______3. The phase when the entire lighted portion of the moon is c. waning gibbous
seen in the sky.
______4. The phase when the moon appears in a semi circular form d. new moon
An is seen after a new moon.
______5. The phase that appears after a waning crescent. e. full moon
______6. The phase that appears when most of the lightest portion f. phases of the moon
Of the moon is seen in the sky, but gets smaller every night.
______7. Earth’s only natural satellite g. moon
______8. The period it takes for the moon to complete one cycle h. last quarter
i. waxing gibbous

V. Assignment
Interview some of the people in your place. Ask them if they know things which are
related to the phases of the moon, e.g. behavior of animals, effects on earth, etc. Then try to
verify/confirm if what you got from your interview are true or just superstitions. Write them
using the table below.
