CONJUNCTIONS

Conjunctions are words used to connect equivalent language units (words with words,
phrases with phrases, clauses with clauses, sentences with sentences, and so on). They are
used to avoid making the text seem like bullet points and to make the text flow.
For example :
Melva saw a cat on the rood and decided to adopt the cat, so she brought the cat
home.
Here ‘and’ and ‘so’ are conjunctions which are used to join the sentences and show the
relation between them. There are three main categories of conjunctions that will be explained,
namely coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, and correlative conjunctions.
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
These conjunctions are used to connect or link two words or phrases that are
equally important and complete in terms of grammar when compared to one another.
That is, the sentences or words do not rely on anything to give them meaning.  For
example, they join a noun with another noun or an adjective with another adjective.
The most common ones are "and," "but," and "or." There are seven in total: "for,"
"and," "nor," "but," "or," "yet," and "so." As you can see, these conjunctions are
arranged in this way to provide the mnemonic acronym of FANBOYS so that it is
easier to remember them. These conjunctions are always placed between the two
clauses or words that they are joining.
Here example for coordinating conjunctions :
1. Melvi does not want coffee. Melvi does not want cake.
( Melvi does not want coffee or cake )
In here, we see how ‘or’ was used to combine the two words and make a cohesive
sentence using them. Also, we can notice how ‘or’ is between the two words.
2. I like him. He don’t like me back.
( I like him but he don’t like me back )
Here we see how ‘but’ was used in the middle to combine and show the relation
between the two sentence that were both equally important and cohesive by
themselves.
2. Subordinating Conjunctions
These conjunctions connect an independent and complete clause with a
dependent clause that depends on the main clause for meaning and significance. The
dependent clause cannot function as a sentence on its own and frequently makes no
sense without the main clause.
The subordinating conjunction is usually placed before the dependent clause,
although the dependent clause might be placed before or after the independent clause.
Common examples are "although," "because," "if," "since," "unless," "until," and
"while."
Here example for subordinating conjunctions :
1. He was fond of playing football because it was his father’s favorite game.
In this sentence, “because” is the subordinating conjunctions as it
introduces the dependent clause ‘it was his fathers favorite game’. The main
clause in this sentence is ‘he was fond of playing football’ as the sentence
which can be said independently and still grammatically correct.

3. Correlative Conjunctions
Correlative Conjunctions are simply pairs of conjunctions that are employed in
a phrase to connect together various words or groups of words. Correlative
Conjunctions are not typically employed to connect sentences, rather, they connect
two or more words of similar importance inside the sentence.  The most common
pairs are "either/or," "neither/nor," and "not only/but also."
Here example for correlative conjunctions :
1. She might either walk to work or take the bus.
The ‘either/or’ conjunctions are used to suggested is between ‘walk to
work’ or ‘take the bus’
2. He neither helps around the house nor does he look for a job.
The ‘neither/nor’ are conjunctions that are used to deny or negate
words and phrases. In this case of ‘neither’, it gives two options that are
both negated. ‘nor’ is the negative from of ‘or’.
3. Not only does he play the lead guitar but also the band’s songwriter.
The correlative conjunctions ‘not only/but’ are used to show an
additional and important element in the sentence that is used to indicate
excess when combined with the first element. For instance, in this sentence
the facxt that he is a guitarist and a song writer are equally important but
when shown together, they indicate an excess of talent in the person.
