TOPIC: CAUSES OF BAD ROADS IN GHANA
Causes of bad roads can be viewed as a research problem because identifying why

roads deteriorate and identifying the contribution factors is important for the development

of effective roads. There are several reasons why roads may become bad. Some of these

reasons include natural factors like flood or earth quake, human factors such as poor

design and maintenance practices. Overall, research into this topic is for improving the

safety and sustainability of transportation systems reducing the economic and social costs

associated with poor road conditions and management to better the lives of people

impacted by poor infrastructure.

Objectives of the research; The objective of this research is to identify the most

significant causes of bad roads in a particular region and recommend solutions to improve

it.

Research question: Why do roads go bad? The research will investigate factors that

contribute to poor road conditions such as poor design, inadequate maintenance, standard

materials and natural disasters. This study will collect data through surveys and research

with observation after which the data will be analyzed to identify the most significant

causes and recommend solutions to address these issues. This research aims to improve the

quality and safety of road infrastructure, benefiting local communities and improving

transportation networks.

Justification: Investigating the causes of bad roads is a research problem as it is

crucial for identifying effective solutions and improving road infrastructure.

Understanding the factors that contribute to poor road conditions can lead to improved

road design, maintenance and construction and improving transportation networks.

The scope of study: The scope of study for this topic is to investigate the causes of bad

roads with a specific focus on poor road design, inadequate maintenance and geological

factors. The study will be conducted in a particular region and data will be collected

through surveys, and observations and interviews.

Variables in this research topic:

 Causes of bad roads. This includes poor design, inadequate maintenance, and

geological factors.

 Region: The area where the research will be conducted

 Data: information collected through surveys, interviews and observations on the

field.

 Solutions: Recommendations for improving road infrastructure.

 Quality and safety of the road: the aim of the research.

Terminologies:

 Bad roads: Roads that are poor in conditions and may have various problems like

potholes, cracks etc.

 Inadequate maintenance: Lack of proper maintenance including insufficient repairs

leading rapid deterioration of roads.

 Geological factors: Atmospheric changes, natural phenomena that can damage

roads.

 Solutions: Recommendations to improve the road effectiveness.
