Task 1 Read the following passages to identify the cause and effect, and figure
out what pattern each one belongs to.

Passage 1
Obesity affects the individual and the country. The biggest effect is on the
individual. First of all, being overweight has health risks. Obesity can lead to heart
disease, diabetes, and other conditions. The quality of life suffers, as it is difficult to
enjoy exercise or move. Another result is lack of self-esteem. This can lead to
depression, eating disorders and crash diets. The country is also affected. It becomes
very expensive for the government to provide advanced medical care such as heart
transplants. Unhealthy citizens are also less productive and their children learn poor
eating habits.

Passage 2
There are a number of factors accountable for this situation that nowadays fewer
and fewer students pay attention to their spelling. One of the most common factors is
that fewer and fewer students need to write English essays. Besides, the goal of most
students to learn English is to speak it and pass the examination, which means they
just need to select the similar words according to the listening materials and passages.
Perhaps the most contributing factor is the wide use of electronic devices such as
e-dictionaries and computers and students no longer need to correct the words by
themselves.

Passage 3
A family is one of the important parts of society, thus many people should be
aware of the significance of couple relationship in family. Although people tend to
think carefully before they get married, the rates of divorce continuously rise
nowadays. At the moment, divorce has become the substantial problem because of
women’s changing roles, stress in modern life and lack of communication.
Nevertheless, there are also the two different ways in effects, which are both negative
and positive. Some couples, who have no children, divorce by consent, therefore
divorce should be a good solution for couples to deal with this problem. On the other
hand, other couples having children in their family should think deliberatively before
they end their marriage in divorce; otherwise innocent children probably become
victims for this situation.
