The purpose of Simple Present Tense

First, to show regular/frequent actions.


Example :
Tina always goes to school by bus on weekdays.
I never watch horror movies.
They sometimes send me emails.
Tommy often reads biographies of Indonesian’s heroes.

Second, to show general facts/truth.


Example :
The sun sets in the east.
Penguins live in Antarctic.
Water boils in one hundred degree.
Swans lay egg.
The form of Simple Present Tense

Positive :
Subject + Verb (s/es) + Object + Complement
Subject Verb Object Complement
She Visits her parents every weekend
I always study Math every Monday

He, she, and it add –s/-es to the verb


The form of Simple Present Tense

Negative:
Subject + does/do not + Verb + Object + Complement
Subject does/do not Verb Object Complement
She does not visit her sister every weekend.
I do not study Math on Mondays.

There is no –s at the end of the verb in the negative.

Questions/ interrogative:
Do/does + Subject + Verb + Object + Complement + ?

Do you study Math on Mondays?

There is no –s at the end of the verb in questions.


Yes/No question in simple present:

This is how you answer for ‘yes/no’ question in simple


tense (nominal sentence, using noun or adjective).

How to form verb in positive :

For most verbs just ad ‘s’ to the end of the verb

How to form verb in positive :

For some words which end by ‘o’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘tch’, ‘x’, ‘z’,
‘ss’, you will need to add –es to the end of the verb.

How to form verb in positive :

For some words which end by ‘consonant + y’, you will


need to change ‘-y’ into ‘-i’ then add –es to the end of
the verb.

Adverb of frequency :

You can use always, usually, seldom, often, sometimes,


rarely, occasionally, never. These adverbs usually go
before the simple present verb.
Example :
The students sometimes visit the museum.
We always wash our hands before meals.
She usually wakes up late on Sundays.

Adverb of time of simple present:

Use repeated adverb of times for this type of sentence,


such as: every…, in the evening (means every evening), at
8 o’clock (means at 8 o’clock everyday), in summer
(means every summer), on Sundays (mean every Sunday)
Example :
They usually have English on Wednesdays.
We always study at 7 o’clock.
My friends go to the beach in summer.
