Simple Present Tense vs Present Continuous Tense

Usage:
Present Simple Present Continuous
Facts and general truth. Actions in progress at the time of speaking.
Wood comes from trees. I am studying English now.
Permanent situation Temporary / changing situations.
Marry lives in a big house with his parents. I am studying to be a vet.
My cat is growing up fast
Habits / repeated actions Annoying habits
I swim every day. He is always complaining!
Future events based on schedules Fixed arrangements for the future
The camping starts on 24 October. We are moving next month.
Narratives (stories, sport commentaries Descriptions of pictures

Adverbs of frequency

Time expressions
Present Simple Present Continuous
Every day / week / month, every other day, At the moment, right now, for the time being,
once a week, twice a month, at the weekend, this morning / afternoon / evening / week /
in June, in the morning / afternoon / evening, month / year, today, etc.
at night, on Sundays, on Friday mornings, etc.
My uncle is visiting tonight.

Structure: Simple Present Tense
( + ) Subject + verb 1
He / She / It / Singular subject + verb 1 (-s/-es).
He runs to keep healthy every morning.
I / You / We /They / Plural subject + verb 1.
The students run in the field every Thursday.

( - ) Subject + do / does + not + verb 1


He / She / It / Singular subject + does not + verb 1 (without -s/-es).
I / You / We / They / plural subject + do not + verb 1.
He doesn’t run every morning.
The students don’t run in the field every Thursday.

Present Continuous
(+) Subject + ‘be’ + verb-ing + adverb

She is not imitating the artist.
They aren’t watching the movie.

Spelling
Present simple Present continuous
Verb ended in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o we add -es -ing form, most verbs plus -ing.
Watch – watches Wear – wearing
Finish – finishes Study – studying
Catch – catches Listen – listening
Do – does One syllable ending in one vowel + one
Kiss – kisses consonant, we double the consonant before
Mix – mixes -ing.
Verb ended in consonant -y, we remove the Sit – sitting
y and add -ies. Two syllables ending in one vowel + one
Try – tries consonant, we double the consonant before
Cry – cries -ing.
Fry – fries Admit – admitting
Verbs ending in -l, we double the -l.
Dial – dialling.
Verbs ending in -e, we remove the -e.
Make – making
Date – dating
Bake – baking

It is a pleasant Sunday and my family and I are relaxing at home. My father usually
washes his car on Sunday. But he is not washing the car now. He is watching news on the TV.
My mother usually makes something special for lunch on Sundays. She is kneading the dough
for making Aaloo-parathas for breakfast. My elder sister usually has her music class on
Sundays. She is not singing now. She is helping mother in the kitchen. My brother usually
helps father to wash the car. He is not helping father now. He is playing with Puppy, our pet
dog. My friends generally come home on Sundays to spend their time with us.
They are not coming now. They will come in the evening. I regularly clean my room on
Sundays. I am not cleaning my room now. I am going to the market to bring some potatoes.
My cat, Kitty is sleeping in her box now. My grandpa is reading the newspaper and
grandma is relaxing in the garden. Mr. Sharma is driving down to our house now. Father has
invited him for the breakfast. My baby sister is smiling now. She has just had a cup of milk.
