Hello, my name is Gracie Adams, and I would like to apply to be in the cosmetology program at

the Davis Technical College! I will discuss what led me to an interest in the profession, skills, and traits
that I possess, and my work ethic and determination.

I am applying for cosmetology because I would like to learn how to do something new and this
seems very exciting and interesting to me. I have grown up as a dancer, so I am no stranger to hair and
hair styling. I have had many dance competitions over the years and have had to do many different hair
styles. My aunt went to cosmetology school and has been bleaching, cutting, and styling my hair ever
since I was three years old! I have always found it so interesting and have been wanting to do it for a long
time! I also will cut my dad’s hair sometimes! I work for a cleaning company called Spring Cleaning. I go
and clean a salon each week. I get to see professionals do their job, so I am around the work area
frequently. I also see the different products that they use, and I am interested in what each of them do.

There are so many skills required to be a Cosmetologist. Skills and personal traits that I possess
are good communication skills and being a hard worker. Some ways that I have shown good
communication skills are by being in a supervisor position at my work. I clean houses and a salon. I am in
a supervisory role and make sure things get done. I have to make sure all the cleaning supplies are ready
to go, I communicate with the other employee’s about work schedules, and days they want off. I have to
ensure that the work is getting done the most efficient way possible. I have to talk to adults when
people come into the homes, as well as other contractors and make sure we can work together in the
home. I also have to communicate with the company supervisors on different cleaning areas they would
like focused on. A situation where I have had to use communication skills is when I go and clean the
salon. I have to communicate with the people working at the salon each night to see what places we can
start cleaning so that we don’t bother their clients. I have had to deal with other communication issues
in a drill team setting. Communication is key being on a drill team. You have to make sure you know the
right counts and everyone else around you also know them. Sometimes there is miscommunication on
what the counts are or what the movement is, and we have to do this or we will not have a successful
routine. The ability to work hard and have good work ethic is important when learning a new skill. I have
demonstrated this by making the drill team. I had to work really hard and had to put lots of time into
trying out for the team. I wasn’t the best dancer, but when tryouts came, I went and practiced at a studio
and learned the tricks that were required dance. I made the team as a ninth grader and have loved it
ever sense. My first year on team I did not make dance routine. I asked my coaches what I could work on
to improve. I was told that I had to work on my turn technique and anticipating movement. I worked at
my turns for a year and did private classes for them. The next year came and I made the routine. Some
skills are hard to achieve at first but with hard work, effort, and practice I can achieve them.

I believe that attending school in person is important. I have always made school a priority and I
understand things best when the class is taught in person. This year I have taken 5 college classes and
have found it very difficult when I miss even one class. It is more difficult to understand the material
when I miss so I make it a priority to not miss class. I have excelled in these classes due to my
commitment and attendance. I have danced for 14 years and absences have never been allowed. There
are very few situations that are acceptable to be gone for. If you don’t show up to class, you do not get
to compete. If someone misses it not only hurts themselves, but it hurts the team.

I have always had an interest in the field of Cosmetology, and I will be successful in this program
because of my good communication skills, work ethic, and determination to prioritize school.
