Hungry Caterpillar Inspired Crochet Pattern

HUNGRY CATERPILLAR INPSIRED CROCHET PATTERN

Materials used:
2.25mm crochet hook
Robin DK yarn in Emerald, apple and red
James C brett top value in brown and
purple for the feet and antennae
King cole dollymix DK in spring green
for the tail.
Scraps of Green yellow and black felt for
the face
I used invisible thread to stitch the face to
the head, alternatively use normal cotton
to match the felt.

Stitches used in American terminology:

Magic ring (MR)
Single crochet (sc)
Half double crochet (HDC)
Inv dec (picking up front loops only of 2 stitches)
Stitch (st)

Make one in red yarn:

2: Inc around (12)
3: *Inc, sc 1* repeat (18)
4: *inc, sc 2* repeat (24)
5: *inc, sc 3* repeat (30)

7: *Inc, sc 5* repeat (42)
8: sc around (42)
9: sc around (42)
10: sc around (42)

At this point I made the felt eyes and nose and attached them to the face by sewing them in place.
I used the book as a guide for the shapes but note that they are not perfectly rounded ovals which makes the
look much easier to achieve.
The nose can be placed exactly in the centre (MR) and the eyes have been placed around 2 rows higher than
the nose. If you prefer you can sew the face to the head once complete.

11: *inv dec, sc 5* repeat (36 stitches)

12: *inv dec, sc 4* repeat (30 stitches)
13: *inv dec, sc 3* repeat (24 stitches)
14: *inv dec, sc 2* repeat (18 stitches)
15 *inv dec, sc 1* repeat (12 stitches)
Fasten off leaving a long tail (around 10 inches) to attach body together.
Stuff fairly firmly being careful not to over stretch stitches.
With a darning needle create a running stitch in remaining stitches (by inserting needle in top loops only
front to back (see image below) pull carefully to close and tie a knot to fasten.

Chain 8. HDC in second chain from hook, HDC, HDC, sc, sc, sc, slip stitch into last chain. Fasten off.

Assembly:
Sew body pieces together in size order using the long tails from fastening off the balls. Sew evenly to create
a flat caterpillar or raise and drop the balls to create an arch (this took a bit of playing around, I would
suggest not weaving in ends until happy with shape of whole caterpillar.)
Do not stuff the legs but sew ‘open’ in a tube shape to the sides of the first, second and second from last
ball.
