Q.) Working principle of Cone over picking mechanism.

A = Bottom shaft, B = Nose cam, C = cone follower, D = Picking shaft, E = Picking stick,
F = Leather picking strap, G = picker

Working Principle: In power loom motion for picking is come from bottom shaft. On each
end of bottom shaft one nose cam is attached. These two cams are mounted on the shaft as 180°
to each other. On each side of the loom there will be one picking mechanism. The bottom shaft
received motion from crank shaft through a gear drive mechanism. The ratio of number of teeth
on gear attached to crank shaft to bottom shaft remained as 1:2, as a result in each loom cycle
bottom shaft make a half rotation.

Due to the half rotation of bottom shaft the nose cam make half rotation the cone
follower which attached with vertical picking shaft will be displaced horizontally towards the
back side of the loom. This causes rotation of picking shaft. This results, the picking stick,
which attached to the uppermost end of the picking shaft, swing in a horizontal plane over the
loom and transmit motion to the picker through picking strap. The picker maintained it’s line
action due to the presence of spindle inside the picker. As the picker make hit on the shuttle, it
fly to the other shuttle box through shed. After the picking the picking stick goes to its original
position due to the spring which attached with picking shaft and the cone follower will be came
in contact with nose cam.

On the other half rotation of bottom shaft the other picker which attached with second
picking shaft will came in action, as a result shuttle fly from second shuttle box to first shuttle
box.

N.B.: 1) Shortening the length of picking trap increase the picking force as a result increase
the shuttle speed.
2) r.p.m. ratio of crank shaft to bottom shaft is 2:1.
3) Cone over picking mechanism is generally used in power loom.

Assign question to student: Why bottom shaft make half rotation in each loom cycle? or
why the rpm of Crank shaft to bottom shaft is 2:1?
