Equivalent Ratio
Equivalent Ratio
Equivalent ratios are those that can be simplified or reduced to the same value. In other words, two ratios are
considered equivalent if one can be expressed as a multiple of the other.
Examples:
1. Find the equivalent ratios of 2 : 5.
Step 1: Transform the ratio into its fractional form (numerator over denominator)
2
5
Step 2: Get the multiple of each number one at a time
Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, …
Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, …
Step 4: 4:7 8 : 14 12 : 21 16 : 28
Try to solve.
3. Find the first two equivalent ratios of 9 : 8
Examples:
Determine whether each pair of ratios are equivalent ratios.
1. 2 : 3.5 and 8 : 14
Step 1: Write both the ratios in fractional form (numerator over denominator).
2 8
2 : 3.5 8 : 14
3.5 14
Step 2: Set them equal to each other and do the cross multiplication.
2 x 14 8x
2 8 2 8
= =
3.5 14 3.5 14
Step 3: If both products are equal, it means that they are equivalent ratios.
2 x 14 = 28 8 x 3.5 = 28
Since both products are Equal, therefore they are EQUIVALENT RATIOS.
2. 5 : 8 and 6:3
Step 1: Write both the ratios in fractional form (numerator over denominator).
5 6
5:8 6:3
8 3
Step 2: Set them equal to each other and do the cross multiplication.
5x3 8x6
5 6 5 6
8
=
3 8
= 3
Step 3: If both products are equal, it means that they are equivalent ratios.
5 x 3 = 15 8 x 6 = 48
Since both products are NOT equal, therefore they are NOT EQUIVALENT RATIOS.
Try to solve.
Determine whether each pair of ratios are equivalent ratios.
3. 3 : 12 and 5 : 20
4. 9 : 6 and 8 : 13
