Power Resources

Solar Energy
• Explain and evaluate the advantages and
disadvantages of producing solar power.

• Identify the physical and human conditions

that favour the development of solar power
Objectives plants.

• State and explain the factors, both physical

and human, which promote or hinder the
availability of solar electricity.
OR
Solar furnaces use giant mirrors to focus the suns rays on
a boiler. Steam from the boiler is used to make electricity.
How it works? Then, solar panels collect heat energy from the sun.
Which they then convert it into electricity.
• Solar Energy is pollution free, efficient and
in limitless supply.
• It causes no greenhouse gases to be
emitted after installation.
• Reduces dependency on fossil fuels.
• Renewable clean power.
• Excess power can be sold back to the
power company
• Creates the chance to live without a grid
system if all power generated is enough
for homes.
• Batteries can be used to store extra energy
for nights
• No maintenance needed as they last over
30 years.
• Can be installed anywhere.
• Safer than the traditional electric current.
Disadvantages of Using
Solar Energy

• High initial costs for material and

installation.
• Requires a lot of space
• A large battery bank is required
for storing energy to use at night
• Solar panels are not mass
produced due to lack of
material.
• Lower production of energy in
winter months.
Importance of using Solar
Energy
• Solar Energy is used in many projects nowadays and
has proven to be very useful.
• It can be used for rural electrification, water
heating, pumping water from wells and for cooking
purposes.
• Solar energy can be used in rural telephone
exchanges, highway emergency telephones,
refrigeration for medicines in hospitals etc.
• For drinking purposes, the Public Health
Department has installed many solar water pumps
in the country.
Feasibility of Solar
Power Plants
• In Pakistan, there is enough potential for solar
energy, as there are 250-300 sunny days a year
and continuous cloudy days are also rare.
• They are compatible with the climate of Pakistan
• Solar power plants are installed in Pakistan
Parliament which has the capacity to generate
1.2MW electricity
• Another solar power plant is in construction in
Bahawalpur aiming to produce 50MW
• Scatec solar project in Sindh, Roshan solar project
in Kasur and Bakhsh solar project have the
capacity to produce 150MG, 10MG and 20MG
respectively.
