Say: Read the dialogue and answer the following questions.
Mama Grace: Josette, can you go to the market for me? I have to finish sewing this uniform.
Mama Grace: We’re going to cook fish sinigang for lunch. So we need some fish, tomatoes, onions,
and kangkong.
Josette: I am going to prepare the market list so that I won’t forget anything.
Mama Grace: That’s good, Josette. I will dictate the things you are going to buy.
Mama Grace: You’re going to buy a kilo of fish, two onions, four tomatoes, one raddish, five okras,
and a bunch of kangkong. Also, one pack of tamarind soup mix, salt, two pieces of
green pepper and two pieces of gabi.
Mama Grace: Try to see if you can buy a kilo of bananas or ripe papaya for our dessert. Here’s the
money. Don’t forget to count the change.
Questions:
Say: Which items can be counted one by one? Which items cannot be counted by piece? Study the
columns below.
Count nouns (Countable noun) are nouns that conceptually be counted. There can be just one of its
kind or there can be more than one.
Example: apple, child, tree, hour, letter
Mass nouns (Non-countable noun) are nouns that cannot be counted such as: water, sugar, ketchup,
powder.

A. Setting the Stage

Say: Read the following words that I am going to show.

Say: Class, our lesson for today is about collective noun.
C. Modelling:
A. Read the paragraph.
A man wanted to sell his son’s donkey. He needed money for his wife’s medicine who had been sick for
a week. He brought the donkey to the market. First, he went to friend’s store.
“Could you buy my donkey?” he asked.
I’m sorry I have no use for a donkey”, the friend replied.
So, the man went to Francis’ bookshop. “Could you buy my donkey?” he asked.
“No, I have a truck that carries my goods,” Francis said.
Then, he went to an old lady’s pet shop. “Your donkey is too old for a pet,” complained the old lady.
As the man was looking for somebody to his donkey, he met the baker’s wife. “My husband is
looking for a donkey to carry the sacks of flour from the port,” she said. The man went to the baker and sold his
son’s donkey. He said, “Now I have money for my wife’s medicine.”
Questions:
1. What did the man want to sell?
2. What was the money for?
3. What kind of husband was he?
4. Where did the man go first?
5. Where did he go next?
6. Where did he go after the bookshop?
7. Whom did he meet?
Possessive nouns- are nouns that express ownership or possession. These words would be a singular or plural
noun. For example:
(Here the word “cat’s” is a possessive noun. It is letting you know that noun “fur” belongs to the cat. The cat
owns the fur.)
Example:
It is Kate’s kitten.
However, for singular nouns that end with –s, add an apostrophe after –s to show possession. (s’)
Example:
In order to make a plural noun possessive that doesn’t end in –s all you have to do is add an apostrophe
and an “s”. (‘s)
Example:
If the plural noun ends with –s, add an apostrophe after the “s” to show possession. (s’)
Example:
One thing to keep in mind is possessive nouns are all about the apostrophes. You’ll need one… with or
without “s”.

Collective nouns- refers to a group or a whole unit of persons, animals, places, or objects. For
example:
‘orchestra’
(this word is a collective noun because one orchestra is made up of many musician: there are many parts to the
whole)

What is a collective Noun?
Collective nouns refers to a group or a whole unit of persons, animals, places, or objects.
Examples of collective noun:
A big _________ of people were in the open theater in the Rizal Park. They were watching a musical
performance. Everyone in the __________ was as quiet as the __________ of musicians played a lilting
number. This was followed by some songs sung by a ________ of singers. The dance _________ presented
some folk dances. All the numbers were well applauded. The people enjoyed the show.
V. Assignment:
List down 10 examples of a collective noun.
