FIRST WEEK- MODAL VERBS
3
We can group Modal Verbs depending on their use:
ABILITY
• We use can/could, to talk about an ability we have now or used to have in the past. I can speak
English. / When I was ten, I already could play the piano.
• When we talk about a specific achievement, we were able to do in the past we’ll never use
could, we’ll use manage to (or be able to): I once managed to bounce a football ball 100 times.
• We use can/could with sensory verbs like see, feel, speak… Even in the past: It was so cold
I couldn’t feel my toes.
SPECULATING
• When we’re speculating about the present or the future, we use a different modal verb
depending on how sure we are about our assumption (see the chart).
• If you’re standing outside someone’s house and you can see their lights are on, it is only logical
to believe that they are home = They must be home. If you have no proof but believe your
assumption is true = They should be home.
• But if you’re not that sure = They may/might/could be home.
• If you’re certain they’re not because they told you they would be away that week, for instance,
= They can’t be home.
• When we’re speculating about something that happened in the past, we use the same modal
verbs in the Perfect form (see chart for examples.)
ADVICE
• We use must/mustn’t for general rules: All students must wear a uniform. We can also
use must/mustn’t when we advise something strongly: You must watch Titanic, it’s a great
movie!
• Depending on what emphasis we want to give to our advice we’ll use a different modal verb
(see chart for specifications).
PERMISSION AND REQUESTS
• We use Modal Verbs in questions to ask for permission or request something from somebody.
Depending on what Modal Verb we choose our question will sound more casual or more polite.
It is not the same to ask Can you help me? than Would you mind helping me? (see chart for
more information).
