CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
PTN is one level of formal education. PTN is education institution in Indonesia which
consists of several faculties which are divided into several. Every year State and Private
Universities open new student admissions. State Universities recruit prospective students
through the SBMPTN (Joint Selection to Enter State Universities). In addition, the reason
they participate in the SBMPTN is cost considerations.
In general, tuition fees at PTN are cheaper than PTS, this is because PTN is a
university whose management and regulation is carried out by the state and gets subsidies in
its development (UUD RI.Pendidikan No.9-2009). The high competition in facing the
SBMPTN encourages the participants to prepare themselves as well as possible to be able to
compete with hundreds of thousands of other participants. In order to successfully pass the
SBMPTN exam, participants are required to master every subject matter that will be tested in
the SBMPTN. One form of preparation to master each subject matter that will be tested is to
take Intensive Tutoring.1.2 Identification The Problems
At this time, it turns out that there are still many schools that do not have a Try out
program for their class XII students due to the lack of facilities and infrastructure in schools
that allow them to seek tutoring for the sake of their UN and UTBK readiness. Then what
about students who are not economically sufficient to take intensive tutoring?
Well,

1.3 Subject
The subject of this research are new students of Medan State University
1.4 Benefits
This interview aims to determine the development of a school in carrying out try outs
that aim to help students in exams. The purpose of this interview is whether trying out
from school is more helpful for students or trying out tutoring is more helpful for students
in exams. The benefits of this research are as follows::

1. Find out whether there are some schools that have a try out program or not
2. To find out whether the student has attended tutoring and whether the tutoring
helped him to graduate or not.
3. To find out how similar the percentage of school materials and tutoring is to the
UTBK questions
4. The effect of tutoring and school materials on UTBK

1
CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
In this framework, there are 2 factors that determine the student's graduation from
school try outs and there are also try outs from tutoring.

2.1 Tutoring
Tutoring is included in educational guidance. The goal is that students easily accept the
lessons given by the teacher, learn easily, know efficient ways of learning and can organize their own
study plans or programs. Tutoring needs to be given because many students have difficulty in
learning, do not know how to choose the right way, lack concentration and so on. And very important
again is that students have the motivation to learn and the encouragement to continue the lessons that
arise from within the students themselves. The end of educational guidance, so that students complete
their studies on time, so they don't stay in class. Tutoring needs to be given, because many students
have difficulty in learning, do not know how to choose the right way, lack concentration and so on.
These difficulties usually have their own causes or backgrounds. Tutoring is one of the important
forms of guidance services held in schools. Experience shows that the failures experienced by
students in learning are not always caused by ignorance or low intelligence. Often these failures occur
because they do not receive adequate guidance services.
At this time, many students are looking for tutoring places so that they can prepare
their Un and UTBK carefully through Try out exercises and also guidance. . Because for
them the material from school is not enough or less effective for them. Especially for grade
12, we know that there are difficult times and dilemmas in preparing for the UTbk SBMPTN
test.
Apart from the material aspect, it turns out that there are several factors that cause the
student to seek additional out-of-school guidance due to the lack of infrastructure and
facilities from the school. There are several schools that still do not provide a special Try out
training program for grade 12.

2.2. School’s Materials

School materials are lessons that can be taken from school institutions that cover all
aspects of subjects. Some of the students we interviewed said that the try out program at their
school was available and there was no need to look for a tutoring place. Because according to
them, it is more material intensive in school than tutoring and is more dominant in going out
during UTBK.
From this, the influencing factors may be in terms of the quality of their schools, both
in terms of technology, infrastructure so that they can make Try Out training programs in
their own schools. This happened because there was already a try out program at their school.

CHAPTER 111
FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

3.1 STUDENTS PREPARATION BEFORE UTBK

Before we explain some of the preparations, we first explain the name, path, and
origin of the new student school we interviewed, the first person named Kayla, mandiri path,
from Dharmawangsa high school, the second person named Theo, mandiri path, from SMA
negeri 3 tarutung , the third person named david, the sbmptn path, from SMA negeri 1
panurungan, the fourth person named Rangga, the sbmptn path, from SMA negeri 1 deli tua,
the fifth person named rafiq, the sbmptn path, from the SMA negeri 1 aceh, so are some new
students who we have interviewed.
More precisely 5 new students from the class of 2022 that we interviewed, we only
found 3 people who entered unimed through the SBMPTN path and 2 more people went
through the mandiri path. From some of these people, most of them when they were in high
school already had preparations to take part the utbk exam, from the new students we
interviewed, they had some preparations to take the utbk exam. For example by taking
tutoring outside school, or taking try outs inside and outside school, and some of these people
took the same tutoring, namely Ganesha operation.
From what we heard from them, some people say that the material they get in
tutoring is more than what is available at school, and the reason they say is because when at
school the material has been studied more deeply when in tutoring, but there is one person
who says that he gets more material at school than in tutoring because according to him the
school deepens the material that has been studied compared to tutoring, and the path he took
to enter Unimed was an mandiri path.

Based on the results of our interviews that we did, here we present the data we have
obtained :

3.2 Student's Barriers during the UTBK Process

Based on table, two of these people had the same obstacles during the UTBK process,
they were too rushed to start studying, therefore they only had a short time to study the
preparation. Indeed, they said they followed the try outs at school, but it wasn't often held at
school so they want it or not they are forced to study on their own because of that they are
very sorry for not studying for the UTBK exam from enough time and these 2 obstacles come
from new students who enter through the mandiri path, 3 of whom acceptef from the sbmptn
path. Their only obstacle was that not all of them understood what was entered or the material
during the UTBK process. They previously said that they had complained about what was
tested during the UTBK process, it didn't match their expectations and were also too hopeful,

4
so they were worried about the results they said, but in the end it was not in vain, they were
still accepted at the campus they were going to.
3.3 The importance of the school's role in preparing the admission of new students for
SBMPTN
After we asked this question, their answers were almost the same, they said "our
school can be said to hold try outs quite often by collaborating with several tutoring
associations, one of which is Ganesha Operation", so they directly said that the school
cooperated with several the tutoring association, they were quite helped to conduct a
simulation of the UTBK exam with the aim of entering the Medan State University.

3.4 The importance of tutoring in preparation for UTBK .

Some of their answers are quite significant from this question, how important is
tutoring for preparation for UTBK? from one of the new students who was accepted into the
sbmptn path named David. According to him the material in tutoring is more clarified and
deepened than at school, but he also said that when he was in tutoring he got more
information about the SBMPTN because in the tutoring it was explained that some
information was told in the tutoring. For example the passing grade of the college major you
chose, the participant registration mechanism, to important dates related the SBMPTN
process, and also when he was in tutoring he was able to know the tricks of working on
questions. For example he said "getting various tricks on working on the SBMPTN
questions, ranging from knowing how to use formulas to tricks to save time and also during
tutoring try outs will be held several times with the aim of testing each other's abilities." from
what we heard is as important as tutoring to prepare for the UTBK exam.

CHAPTER IV
CLOSING
4.1 Conclusion
Based on the data we obtained through these interviews, it can be concluded that the
five students we interviewed were those whose schools had a Try Out program for grade 12
but were still studying at the same tutoring center, namely Ganesha Operation. But they had
different arguments when asked which one was more helpful when preparing for UTBK 2 of
them said that Ganesha Operation tutoring was more helpful during UTBK preparation
(70% : 30% and 60% : 40%). However, their school also has a Try Out program, but they still
take out tutoring.
Furthermore, 2 more students said that the material at the dam tutoring school was
equal or balanced because the tutoring was in collaboration with their school. And another
one said that school materials were more helpful, which was about 70% compared to tutoring
which amounted to 30%.
This can be different due to school quality factors, the existence of school cooperation
and tutoring. The five schools actually have the same learning outcomes but the ways to
achieve them are definitely different. Students who say that tutoring is much more helpful
than the material in their school means that the school is still not optimal and effective in the
teaching and learning process. Furthermore, students said that the school and tutoring
materials were the same because of the collaboration between schools and tutoring which
certainly had a good impact on the school. And lastly, he said that the material at the school
was much more helpful than the tutoring. Why did this happen? Of course, maybe because
the material in the tutoring followed the material from the school which would be reworked
at school.
4.2 Suggestion
We can see from the result of interview, more students say that tutoring is much more
helpful than schools, which means tutoring is very important and useful for students who
want to prepare for PTN tests such as UTBK because we know that the material from school
is not enough. as preparation. For this reason, 12th grade students should attend intensive
tutoring if they want to continue their studies..
