INTRAPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION?
What is the word
intrapersonal?
The term "intrapersonal" describes how an
individual connects with oneself.

Intrapersonal communication is the
act of communicating with oneself,
commonly through internal dialogue
or self-talk.
History of
Intrapersonal
Communication
American psychologist Carl Rogers first
used the phrase "intrapersonal
communication" in the 1960s. He used it
to describe ways that people express
themselves and interact with their inner
selves.
One of the earliest definitions of
"intrapersonal communication" in the
field of communication was developed
by Larry Barker and Gordon Wiseman.
Types of
Intrapersonal
Communication
SELF-AWARENESS - To understand
how you view yourself in relation to
others.

PERCEPTION - You are defined by how


you view other people.

EXPECTATIONS - Is to understand what


you want from both yourself and other
people.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
INTRAPERSONAL AND
ENTERPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION
INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION involves
feeling, thinking, observing your thoughts simply
because you're confident of it.

ENTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION involves two


or more person communicating.

SELF-TALK - This is the inner
conversation that someone has in their
head.

REFLECTION - This involves reflecting


on past occurrences, actions, and
beliefs.

EXPECTATIONS - Is to understand what


you want from both yourself and other
people.
ADVANTAGES OF
INTRAPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION
Acknowledging your feelings - You become more
self-conscious and emotionally aware when you
engage in intrapersonal dialogue.

Increasing confidence in oneself - You might feel


more self-assured when you can identify your
strengths in any aspect of your life.

Understanding - Enables you to connect with


others' emotions and makes it simpler for you to
comprehend the viewpoint of another individual.
DISADVANTAGES OF
INTRAPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION
Self-deception - When speaking to oneself, one
faces the risk of being locked in their own
perspective and failing to consider alternative
viewpoints.

The possibility for overanalyzing and ruminating -


Can occasionally lead to excessive self-reflection
and analysis.

Lack of external feedback - Relying only on


interpersonal communication can reduce
chances for social interaction and teamwork.
