As a future medical technologist, what is the importance of learning and understanding

RA 7170? Limit to 3-5 sentences only.
- Republic Act No. 7170, also known as Organ Donation Act of 1991, mostly applies
to the physician, nurses, medico-legal officers and other health professionals. A
medical technologist is also part of health professional that is why we must still
learn and understand the mentioned law. In the Section 2(f) of RA 7170, blood and
other fluids is included as part for the transplantable organs or donation which a
future medical technologist will deal in their future profession. Moreover, medical
technologist are the ones who screen organs that are for donation or

part of health professionals, it is important for us to learn, understand and be
familiar with the laws that is related with our profession for us to give a better
healthcare to the patients.

2. What is the main difference of the two modes (Legacy and Donation) of executing
organ donation? You may provide key points for differentiation to simplify your
answer.
- These two modes of executing organ donation can be confusing if not properly
understood. In legacy, the testator can make a will of testament, card or any
document with his or her signature while in donation, there is an absence of the
mentioned documents as the donor, the immediate family of decedent, can decide.
There is also a difference with the person who can execute the legacy or donation.
Legacy requires any individual who is at least 18 years of age and of sound mind
while donation has a hierarchy of prioritization of whose decision should be
followed. Moreover, in legacy there can be a specific legatee whereas in donation,
it could not have or could have a specific donee.

3. Give practical examples to illustrate clearly each mode of organ donation. 1 example

each.
- A practical example of legacy could be when a person gets a driver’s license.
Accidents can happen and nobody knows how fatal it can be. With that, during
filling up a form, there will be a question or consent about organ donation whether
they agree or not. Also, it can be seen at the back part of driver’s license.
- For donation, a good example of it is when there is a sudden death of a family
member and his or her organs are healthy. A physician could approach the spouse
and talk about donating the organs of the decedent. This typically happens if there
is a patient admitted in the hospital that is looking for an organ donor. The decision
is still up to the donor which is the immediate family of the decedent.
