EXAMPLE:
The ages of five contestants in a MMW Quiz
Bee are the following;
18, 17, 18, 19 and 18. Find their average age.

𝑥 18 + 17 + 18 + 19 + 18
x̄ = =
𝑁 5
90
x̄ =
5
x̄ = 18

Arrange the given data first to

get the median.
 If the number of scores is odd number
then we have 1 median only.
Example: 2, 6, 8, 12, 14

x͂ = 8
 If the number of scores is even
number then we need to add the two
middle values and divide it by 2 to get
the exact median.
Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

3+4 7
x͂ = = = 3.5

It is the data that occurs most often in the data set.
Arrange the scores from lowest to highest to
determine the mode of the given data set.
EXAMPLE:
Find the mode of the given data set; 15, 28, 25,
48, 22, 43, 39, 44, 43, 49, 34, 22, 33, 27, 25,
22, and 30.

Arrange the data set from lowest to highest.

15, 22, 22, 22, 25, 25. 27,

28, 30, 33, 34, 39, 43, 43,
44, 48, 49.
15, 22, 22, 22, 25, 25. 27,
28, 30, 33, 34, 39, 43, 43,
44, 48, 49.

Therefore; mode is 22 and the

data set is said to be unimodal.
Drill #1:
The students got the following grade
in MMW. 83, 70, 95, 90, 88, 96, 90,
90, 75, and 85. Find the mean.
Answer:

𝑥
x̄ =
𝑁

83 + 70 + 95 + 90 + 88 + 96 + 90 + 90 + 75 + 85
=
10

862
x̄ =
10
x̄ = 86.2
Drill #2:
Eight books were randomly selected and
the numbers of pages were recorded as
follows; 415, 398, 402, 400, 420, 415,
407, 425. Find their median.

398, 400, 402, 407, 415, 415, 420, 425

407+415 822
x͂ = = = 411

Drill #3:

The speed of 10 stenographers in

typing per minute are as follows;
121, 110, 120, 119, 112, 121, 118, 115,
107, 115. Find the mode.
Answer:

107, 110, 112, 115, 115, 118, 119, 120,

121, 121.

Thus, the data set has 2 modes; 115 and

121. the data set is said to be bimodal.
Drill #4:

Find the mode of the given data;

2, 5, 8, 9, 11, 4, 7, 23.
