DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8

Demonstrator: Janice R. Villaplaza

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Defines mean, median and mode;
b. Solve the mean, median and mode of the given set of data;
c. Apply in real life situation in describing the data by the terms of mean,
median and mode.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: “Measures of Central Tendency of Ungrouped Data”
Reference: Mathematics 8
Instructional Materials: Visual Aids, Chalk
Subject Integration: English, Values Education
Skills: Computing and analyzing
Values Integration: Appreciative, Collaboration
III. Procedure:
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preparation
Let us pray first.
Please lead Ms. Delosa. Good morning, everyone, so let us pray,
In the name of the Father, the Son and
the Holy Spirit, Amen…

Good morning class! Praise be Jesus

and Mary! Now and forever
Amen.
a. Energizer
Ok class, do you know the song of
The Law of Sign? Yes maam

That’s good! So, let’s sing it together!

(“Same sign adds and keep, different
sign subtracts, get the sign of the bigger
number then you’ll be exact”) 2x

Very good! Let’s give ourselves a

fireworks clap!
b. Checking of Attendance
So now, I will check your attendance
first. None Ma’am
Who are absent from the class today?
Okay very good! None ma’am
Now, do we have any assignments?
Okay now, let’s proceed.

c. Imposing Rules
Okay class, before I will start our
discussion, I would like to imposed my rules
in this class. First, if someone is talking in
front please listen quietly, you can talk
freely if it is your turn. Second, raise your
hand if you are going to answer. And lastly, Yes maam
participate and enjoy the class.
Is that clear?

d. Motivation
Now, before we proceed to our topic
this morning let’s play a game entitled
“ANAGRAM”. I will group into two groups
and each group has five representatives to
play the game.

Mechanics: Each team has five

representatives to arrange the following
words to another word without wasting any
letter from the word. The first player will
arrange the first word then the next player
will follow until to the last given word. In
every correct word composed of two
points.
I have here five selected words that
connected in mathematics; all you have to
do is to rearrange the word into another
word or the “ANAGRAM” of the given word.

For example:
LOVES = SOLVE
MEDICAL = DECIMAL
DAD = ADD
No ma’am

No ma’am

“Measures of Central Tendency of

You know class that these five are
Ungrouped Data”
connected to each other and connected to
our new topic this morning?

You know class that the MEAN,

MEDIAN and MODE are measurements of a
given data set?

B. Presentation
So be with me this morning class, as I
discuss to you about “Measure of Central Yes ma’am
Tendency (Ungrouped Data)

Everybody read!

a. Statement of the aim

Class Listen carefully because after my
discussion you will be asked to define the
mean, median and mode, solve the mean,
median and mode of the given set of data
and lastly, you will be asked to apply your
learnings in describing the data by the
terms of mean, median and mode.

Am I understood class?

C. Developmental Proper
Okay class there are three measures of
central tendency, first one is the mean.

Mean- is the most commonly used measure

of central tendency. It is used to describe a
set of data where the measures cluster or
concentrate at a point. It is found by adding
the values of data and dividing by the total
number of values.

It is given with the formula

x=
∑x
N
Where:
∑x= the summation of x or (the sum of
the measure)
N= number of the values of x.

For example:

80, 80, 83, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89, 90, 94

So, from the formula given, let us now try

to analyze and then substitute the given
values to the given formula.
x=
∑x
N

80+80+ 83+84+ 85+87+88+ 89+90+ 94

x=
10

x=86
Hence, the mean grade of the ten students
is 86.

Second example:
Yes ma’am
The five players of basketball team have
the scores of 10, 15, 20, 10, and 25.
Find the mean: None ma’am
x=
∑x
N

10+15+20+10+25
x=
5

80
x=
5

x=16
Therefore, the mean score of five players
of basketball is equal to 16.

Do you understand class on how to find

the mean of the given data?

Are there any questions?

Okay let us proceed to the second

measure of central tendency.

Median- is the midpoint of the array. The

median will be either a specific value or
will fall between two values.

First example:
Using the same data above.
The math grades of ten students are 85,
80,88, 83,87,89,84,80,94, and 90.

Find the median.

Solution:

To find the median, we need to arrange

The median is 86 ma’am
first the data in increasing order that is
from least to greatest or vice versa.

80, 80, 83, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89, 90, 94

Since the middle point falls halfway

between 85 and 87, so in order to get the
median, we need to get the mean of these
two values. Arrange first the given data ma’am from
least to greatest or vice versa
85+87
Median=
2
10, 10, 15, 20, 25
172
Median=
2 15 ma’am

Median=86

There what is the median?

Yes ma’am
Second example:
10, 15, 20, 10, 25 None ma’am

Now you will try this one. Because the

data is odd you can easily identify the
midpoint or the median of this example.

So, what should be done before we

identify the median?

Okay very good!

What is the arrangement?

Okay very good, so what is the median on

that data set?

Yes, that’s right! Excellent!

Okay, is it all clear class?

Any questions?
Okay, now let’s proceed to the third
measure of central tendency. 80 ma’am

Mode- is the value that occurs most often

in the data set. It is the value with the
greatest frequency. A data can have more Yes ma’am
than one or none at all. To find the mode
for a set of data we are to consider the
following:
206, 206, 215, 265, 265, 282,297, 301,
1.) Select the measure that appears most
305
often in the set.
2.) If two or more measures appear the
The modes of the given data are 206 and
same number of times, then each of these
265, since these are the values that most
values is a mode.
often occur in the given data.
3.) If every measure appears the same
number of times, then the set of data has Yes ma’am
no mode.

First example:

Using the same data above.

80, 80, 83, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89, 90, 94

So, from the definition, what number

occurs most often in the given data?

Yes, very good!

It is how easy it is, right?

Second example:
206, 206, 215, 265, 265, 282,297, 301,
305

So now, I want you to solve or to get the Answers:

mode of the given data.
1. 58, 61, and 62
2. 32
Very good!
3.

Did you enjoy the game class?

E. GENERALIZATION
Again class, what are the measures of
central tendency?
Now, what is mean?
It is the middle ma’am

Very good!
The center of my life is my family
How about median?

The center of my life is my mother

And lastly the mode?
Yes ma’am

Yes, very good everyone!

F. VALUES INTEGRATION
Now class a while ago, we discuss about on
I always make God as the center of my
how to measure central tendency of
life because I know ma’am with God,
ungrouped data. From the word central
nothing is impossible.
class, we can associate it with the word
center.
Now, how will you define the word center?

Yes? _________
Yes, that’s right!

Now, how about in your real-life situation

class, who is the center of your life?

Yes, ___________

Another idea?

Yes, ___________

How about God, did you also make Him as

the center of your life?

Why did you make God as the Center of

your life?

Yes, ___________

Exactly!

So, class, whoever is the center of our life

we should not forget God because He is the
source of everything. Whatever decisions or
thing we will make, we should not forget
God because without Him we are nothing.
