SUBSTANCE AND MIXTURES
A substance is matter that is always made up of the same combination of atoms. There are two types
of substance; elements and compounds. Elements are consisting of just one type of atom. It can be found in
the periodic table. Elements can exist as a single atom or as diatomic table- two atoms bonded together. The
common examples are iron, gold, silver and lead. Compounds are two or more types of atoms bonded
together and can’t be separated by physical methods. The examples of compounds are baking soda, salt,
and water which can be seen at home.
Mixtures are two or more substances that can physically blended together. There are two types of
mixture; heterogeneous and homogenous. A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in which substances are not
evenly mixed such as chocolate chips, ice cubes in cola and fruit salad. A homogenous mixture is a mixture
in which two or more substances are evenly mixed on the atomic level but not bonded together. Best
examples for homogenous mixtures are coffee, orange juice and salt solution.
