EVAPORATION

Particles are always in motion. The particles in a molecule have kinetic energies that differ from each
other. Some particles are moving faster than others and therefor have higher Kinetic Energy (KE) while some
are moving slower. To break away from the surface of the liquid, the molecules must have at least some
minimum KE. The process by which molecules on the surface of a liquid break away is called evaporation.

Evaporation happens when liquid substance becomes a gas. When water is heated, it evaporates.
The molecules move and vibrate so quickly that they escape into the atmosphere as molecules of water vapor.
Evaporation is a cooling process. The rate of evaporation is dependent on the temperature. If the temperature
increases, the evaporation rate increases. Other factors that affect the rate of evaporation are; air movement,
presence or absence of other substances in the liquid, exposed surface area of the liquid and concentration of
the evaporating substance in the air.

EXAMPLES:

Hot tea gets cool over time due to evaporation, sun drying of wet clothes, evaporation of water
sprinkled on ground or rooftop, removal of nail paint applied on nails through evaporation, and evaporation
produced by boiling of water to make coffee or tea.

ACTIVITY 1: Evaporation
Direction: Perform the activity and answer the following questions.

Materials: Hand Sanitizer/ Alcohol

Instruction:
1. Pour small amount of hand sanitizer/alcohol on your hands and rub them together.
2. Think about how your hands feel while rubbing your hands together with sanitizer/alcohol.
3. Wave your hands for 15 seconds.
4. Think about how your hands feel now.
Guide Question:
1. How did your hands feel when you put the sanitizer/alcohol on them?

2. What happens to the sanitizer after applying it on your hands?
________________________________________________________________________________________
3. Why we need to use hand sanitizer?
________________________________________________________________________________________
4. Why do hand dryers use hot air instead of just normal air?
________________________________________________________________________________________
5. Where does the water go when it evaporates from a liquid?

ACTIVITY 2:
Direction: Read each statement carefully. Put / if the statement describes evaporation and put X if it
is not. Write your answer non the space provided before each number.
