4.Conclusion ...............................................................................................................................8
Verbs carry actions that we do in our day-to-day life, without verbs there is no action. In the
English language, the verbs can be divided into two types or categories, namely: regular and
irregular verbs.
Thus, regular verbs are those verbs which maintain their radical along the conjugation or those
formed by adding “ed” or simply a “d” to the past simple or past participle tense. E.g. Base form
– play; past simple tense – played; past participle – played.
Irregular verbs are those verbs that form their past simple and past participle in an irregular way
or those verbs that during the conjugation don’t maintain their radical. Thus, these types of verbs
have no conjugation rule, therefore, it’s fundamental to learn and know them by heart. E.g. Base
form – eat; pat simple tense – ate; past participle – eaten.
In that context, this English assignment aims to know in a summarized way, the use and usage of
regular and irregular verbs. As a way of its fulfilment, the author proposed the following specific
objectives:
In terms of work methodology, in the present study the author applied for bibliography research
which was based on secondary sources of data, collected mainly from different research articles,
books, handouts, internet sources and others, as a way of attaining the objectives previously
proposed for the study.

2. Literature revision
According the oxford dictionary, “a verb is a word or a group of words that expresses an action,
(such as eat), an event (occur) or a state (such as exist)”.
In the same context, the Britannica dictionary defines verb as being a “word (such as jump,
think, happen, or exist), that is usually one of the main parts of a sentence and that expresses an
action, occurrence, or a state of being“.
According to the concepts above, we can comprehend that every sentence must have a verb
because the verbs play an important role into a sentence. The verbs can be divided into action
verbs (those that show some kind of action – danced, played eaten, throw, bake, etc.) and linking
verbs which can also be as helping verbs (those verbs used to link , help or join words – am, is,
are, was, were, be, being, been, feel, smell, taste, sound, look, seems, becomes, etc.)
Verbs can be used into the present simple tense. E.g. I like dancing. In the past tense E.g. I
danced yesterday; or in future. E.g. I will dance tomorrow\I am going to dance tomorrow.
A regular verb can be defined as any verb whose conjugation follows the typical pattern, or one
of the typical patterns, of the language to which it belongs. This kind of verbs forms its past
simple and past participle mainly by adding ‘–ed” or simply a –d to the infinitive or base form
of the verb.

Example
In the table above, it’s possible to observe that the suffix –ed or –d, does not alter in both, past
simple tense and the past particle of the verbs stressed.
It`s important to remember that the past simple is used to describe an action or activity that is
already completed in the past.
Examples:
The past participle is used with `have` to form a specific verb tense called present or past perfect
tense or as adjective.
Examples:
Irregular verbs are those verbs that do not follow the normal patterns during the conjugation in
the past simple and past participle as it does happen with regular verbs.
6
This type of verbs is the hardest parts of the modern English language, because they are totally
different from the regular ones. These verbs do not have formula or real structure; therefore, it’s
crucial that the English speakers memorize each one of them, along with their special verb
forms; otherwise, they are going to face conjugation mismatches always.
Examples:
Go Went Gone
Do Did Done
If we observe the table above attentively, we realize that there is no rule or real pattern when it
comes to conjugate the irregular verbs.
Examples in sentences
From the examples given above, we could realize that the verbs used (eat and do), do not keep
their original pattern during conjugation. Thus, the verb “to eat”, changes to ate in the past
simple, and eaten in the past participle form. In the same context, the verb “to do”, changes to
did, in the past simple and done in past participle form.

4. Conclusion
Along this English assignment, we spoke about regular and irregular verbs. On this wire, we
learnt that regular verbs are those verbs that maintain their radical or pattern form during
conjugation, and they mainly end with –ed or –d in both, past simple tense and past participle
tense. For example the verbs dance and watch change to danced and watched in the past simple
and past participle respectively.
Irregular verbs are those verbs that do not follow the normal patterns during the conjugation in
the past simple and past participle as it does happen with regular verbs. For example, the verb
choose changes to chose in the past and chosen in the past participle.
This type of verbs is the hardest parts of the modern English language, because they are not
similar to the regular ones, that`s why it is fundamental for the learners to memorize them by
heart.
Just to sum up, the verbs play a very important role in grammar and vocabulary as they are the
heart of the sentences and clauses, they show the actions and feelings of the subject. Verbs are
words that are absolutely necessary to make a sentence and without them, speakers would be
unable to create and use utterances because there is at least one verb in every sentence.
