QUESTION 1 (15 Marks)

The measurable organizational value (MOV) provides a clear understanding of the project’s
purpose and is the foundation for writing the business case.

a) Based on Figure 1 above, describe why should a project align with an organization’s strategy,
vision, and mission? (3 marks)

• To provide real value to an organization, a project align with an organization’s strategy,
vision, and missions.
• A vision statement articulates and inspires, while mission statement clarifies what the
organization does, who they do it for, and how or why they do it.
• Based on the vision and mission statements, management devises an organization
strategy.

b) What is the main purpose by having the business case? (2 marks)

Answer: The main purpose of business case is to obtain approval and funding for the planning
phase of the project.

c) Initial investment = RM 500,000


Net cash flow = RM60,000
Net profit margin = RM 300
Total expected cost = RM 400,000
Total expected benefits = RM 450,000
Total expected value = RM180,000

Based on the above information, calculate:

i. Payback Period = initial investment/ net cash flow


= 500000/60000
= 8 years
(1 marks)

ii. Breakeven Point = initial investment/ net profit margin


= 500000/300
= 1667 unit
(1 marks)
iii. Return on Investment = (Total Expected Benefit – Total Expected Costs) /
Total Expected Costs
= (450000 – 400000)/ 400000
= 0.125
= 12.5% (2 marks)
d) Table below shows the expected cash flows for 5 projects A, B, C, D and E. Calculate the Net
Present Value (NPV) for each project. Which of the following project should be selected,
assuming a 10% discount rate?
