Day 1
(Time estimate, 40 minutes)

Prep:
-Print off the pictures and tape them around your classroom
-Print off enough recording sheets for each student
-Print off enough group sorts for however many groups you plan to
use. I find 3 to be the perfect amount of students in each group
-Have the situation cards printed off and choose 2 to use for today
-Print off chant poster or have it ready to pull up digitally if you’re
able to project it on the board

Instructions
Basic Hunt (10-15 minutes)
Students will go around the room with their recording sheets. At each
picture they will read the statement and then on their recording sheet
they can mark if it’s true or not true. Go over answers as a class. This
is a SIMPLE activity to get the juices flowing. Tell students that you
know they know the difference between something that’s true and
something that’s not true. Sometimes we use other words to describe
what’s true and what isn’t and it’s time to see if they can do
something a little harder.
Group Sort (10 minutes)
Sort students into groups. Give each group a word sort. Students
should sort all the words under the “True” header or “Not True”
header. Review as a class. Tell class that this week they will be
learning a lot more about HONESTY. These words will all be used this
week and you’re so glad that your class knows the difference.
Situation Cards (10 minutes)
Choose 2 situation cards and read them as a class. These are great to
spark discussion on situations that aren’t so clear cut. Feel free to
role play some situations with your students. You may also choose to
assign students to act it out for the class and then discuss what
happened.
Chant (3 minutes)
Learn the chant and sing it as a class multiple times.

Day 2
(Time estimate, 45 min-1 Hour)

Prep:
-Have a picture book ready. Good books for today would be: A
Bike Like Sergio, The Golden Plate, Harriet and the Garden. If you
can’t find them in your local library, search online for a free read
aloud version.
-Vanilla Ice cream (enough for all children)
-Salt
-3 glass or ceramic bowls
-Pack of paper bowls and spoons for class
-Paper towel
-Hershey Syrup
-A big bowl of water
-Worksheet copied for each student
-3 Situation Cards
-Masking Tape (tape a line down the center of your room-
optional)
-The night before object lesson put a little water in one of the
bowls and then add in a bunch of salt. Let it dry (use a blow
dryer to help harden the salt.) Add another layer and let it dry so
it is thick and hard.
Instructions

-Read Aloud (10 minutes)

Take a minute or 2 to review what students learned about honesty yesterday. Choose a
book from the list and read it aloud to your class. Ask how the character felt about the
situation they were in, if it was honest, and how they handled the situation.

-”Covering Up Lies” Object Lesson

(20 minutes- From overthebigmoon.com)
You should have 3 ceramic bowls (1 of them should already have salt hardened and
dried at the bottom. This is bowl number 3) Take out bowl number 1 and put a scoop
of ice cream in it in front of your class. Ask who likes ice cream? Explain that
sometimes we make bad choices. What about putting salt on ice cream, would that be
a good choice? Take a teaspoon of salt and sprinkle it on top of the ice cream. Make a
big deal about saying oops! Sometimes we get embarrassed about the choices we make,
so we try to cover them up with a lie. At this point, take the syrup and cover all the salt
with the syrup. Ask, can you see the salt anymore? Can you smell it? How would it
taste? Choose a couple students to give a shallow spoonful of. They should taste the
salt. Explain that this is how lying is– we try to cover up what we did that was bad, but
it doesn’t really go away. The only way to get rid of the salt is to start over and go back
and make our mistake right. Take the second bowl and add a little salt to the bottom.
Explain that when we tell a lie we can go back and make it right. Hand a student a
paper towel and they should easily be able to wipe it out. Next take the third bowl.
Explain that sometimes we have told a lie a long time ago and everyone has forgotten,
but we don’t. Sometimes the lies build up because we have to tell more lies to cover the
first one we told. The longer you let it go, the harder it gets to tell the truth. Try and
wipe the salt away, it shouldn’t come off. Take the big bowl of water and put the salty
bowl inside. Swish it around a few times until the salt dissolves. Explain that
sometimes it’s difficult to correct a bigger lie and we need extra help or tools. Talk
about what we can do if we’re caught in a big lie and what resources we have. Dish up
ice cream for everyone after your discussion finishes.

-Worksheet (15 minutes)

Have students complete the Is It Honest worksheet. They can do this as they finish
eating their ice cream. After doing 1 together, you may also let students work in pairs
or groups. Review and discuss.

-Situation Cards (10 minutes)

Have students stand on the piece of tape down the middle of the classroom. Using the
rest of the situation cards have students move to one side if the card is honest and the
other side if the card is dishonest. They may stay on the line if it’s “blurry.”

Day 3
(Time estimate, 45 minutes)

Prep:
-Have a picture book ready to go. Some coordinating books for today’s
lesson would be: The Lying King and Edward Fubwubber Fibs Big.
-Bag of frozen peas placed in a Ziploc bag (they should be thawed by the
time of lesson.)
-A Bag of green candy (can be any color if you can’t find plain green)
-Copies of the Web of Lies worksheet
-Ball of yarn (thinner yarn is best)

Instructions
-Read Aloud (10 minutes)
Take a minute or 2 to review what students learned about honesty yesterday.
Choose a book from the list and read it aloud to your class. Ask how the character
felt about the situation they were in, if it was honest, and how they handled the
situation.
-Peas & Candy Object Lesson (10 minutes)
Idea from : teachingwithhaleyoconner.com
Tell the class you’re going to give them all a candy. Tell them they must wait until
everyone has one on their desk until they can eat it. Pass out the peas. You will
have students figure out immediately that this isn’t candy. Dramatically apologize
and say you were just teasing them. To them this time you’ll really give them candy.
Ask how many students believe you. Talk about how when you’ve told a lie, you
loose trust. Pass out the candy with the same procedure. You will have students
continue to not trust you. This is a great way to continue the discussion of trust.
-Web of Lies Worksheet (15 minutes)
Pass out worksheet and give instructions for how you’d like it to be completed
(pairs, groups, individuals.) If you feel like students may need some movement you
can add in the “freeze dance” concept. When music is playing students can rock out
and move around the classroom. When music stops they rush back to their seat
and work on their page. Keep in mind students will need crayons or colors to
complete this page.
-Tangled Up Demonstration (10 minutes- optional activity)
Ask a student to come up and hold a piece of string. Tell the class that this string
represents a lie. Ask another student to come try and break the string (this
shouldn’t be too difficult depending on age.) Explain that 1 lie isn’t so hard to break
out of and it’s easy to fix. Next wrap the string back and forth around the students
2 hands. Continue until the yarn has really built up. Ask another student to come
break all the pieces apart. Discuss how when lies build up, it’s difficult to break
free. End the day with the honesty chant

Day 4
(Time estimate, 45 minutes)

Prep:
-Have a picture book ready to go. Being Frank or The Honest to Goodness
Truth work especially well in today’s lesson.
-Print out “Act and Place” sentences and cut them into strips.
-Print out “Change the sentence” page and cut into strips.
-Blank pieces of drawing paper (1 per student.)

Instructions
-Read Aloud (10 minutes)
Take a minute or 2 to review what students learned about honesty yesterday. Choose a book from the list
and read it aloud to your class. Ask how the character felt about the situation they were in, if it was
honest, and how they handled the situation

-Act & Place It (15 minutes)

Explain to students that although some things are honest, they may not need to be said. We need to use
tact and decide if it has to be said or if there’s a better way to phrase it. Is it important to be honest? YES!
However, it is also important to be kind. Draw a line down the center of the white board. On one side
write “Honest” and on the other side write “Doesn’t need to be said.” Explain to students that if the
sentence belongs on the “honest” side students stand up like a big X and if it belongs on the other side
students stand up like a pencil. Put the Act & Place strips into a container and let one student come up at
a time and read the sentence. All students should do the action and the reader can tape the sentence on
whatever side of the board it belongs. Repeat for all sentences and discuss as you go along.

-Change the sentence (15 minutes)

This activity tends to work best with students who are 3rd grade and older. Discuss how we can be
honesty about how we’re feeling and still be kind. For example instead of saying, “Just leave me alone!”
We could say, “I know you want to help me, however right now I need a little space.” We start with a
positive or even a validation sentence. We notice the good in what the other person is doing, we add in
HOWEVER and then we speak our truth. Good + HOWEVER + Truth. Split students into groups and
give each group a sentence card. Have students change the sentence so it matches the new formula of
Good + HOWEVER + Truth. Let each group share.

-Change the sentence extension + Illustration (20 minutes)

This is an extension activity and is great if you have the time to do it. Have students think of their own
example to turn a sentence into a Good+However+Truth sentence. Give students a drawing paper. They
can write the original sentence at the top, illustrate it in the middle and their revised sentence at the
bottom. You can also give the students an original sentence and let them change it in their own way. For
example give all students this sentence to start with: “Stop looking at my paper!”
End the day with the honesty chant!

Day 5
(Time estimate
Advanced Group- 70 minutes, Simplified 45
minutes)

Prep:
-The Empty Pot book
-Blindfolds (about 10)
-Create an “obstacle course” indoor or outdoors
-Tissue paper
-Drawing paper
-Glue
-Markers or Crayons
-Bag of sunflower seeds
-Watercolors

Instructions
-Read Aloud (10 minutes)
Take a minute or 2 to review what students learned about honesty yesterday. Read aloud The Empty Pot
to your class. Ask how the character felt about the situation they were in, if it was honest, and how they
handled the situation.

-Trust Game (20 minutes)

Have students get into pairs. Start all pairs at one side of the obstacle course. I’ve just done it inside my
classroom using desks, chairs and supplies from the PE teacher! Show the students how to go through
obstacle course. Next pull out the blindfolds! Explain that one student will be blind folded and it is the
other persons job to verbally “lead” them through the course. Please STRESS to students the importance
of maturity for this activity. It’s not ok to purposefully direct someone the wrong way. If you feel like this
is a probability in your class, it may be better to have just a few kids go through and use it more as an
object lesson. Ask students how will they know if they can trust the person leading them? Discuss how
multiple honest answers, honest situations, and honest behavior build trust and lead to someone who is
trustworthy. Let students go through obstacle course.

-”Seeds of Honesty Lead to Trustworthy "Craft (40 minutes)

Pull out the art supplies (tissue paper, drawing paper, markers/crayons, glue, water colors, and
sunflower seeds. Students will glue a few seeds on the bottom of their page. They can create a tissue
paper flower(s) and glue it on their page. Using a marker have students write somewhere “Planting Seeds
of Honesty Lead to Being Trustworthy.” Students can then lightly watercolor the rest of the page.

-Simplified Craft (15 minutes)

I included a simpler template on the next page. Students can still glue seeds down below the flowers if
you’d like them to, and color it.
