DIRECTIONS: Watch to Understand
The function of Asian musical theater is not just about costumes and dances, but it also
tells story. Watch the links given below and describe how a specific idea or story is
communicated through music. (Video is already attached in your Frontlearner)
What is the story all about? Give a brief answer.
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOskLbfn9AA = Wayang kulit in English. Dewa
Ruci
While narrating, in my observation I hear some traditional background music. While the
puppets are being moved the story follows. What makes it different from other shadow
puppet shows is how the puppets and story are kept traditional.

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVDUcFOnVKk = Kabuki on Stage: A Solo

Performance at Portland Japanese Garden
Although the music is in another language, the barrier between another language does not
stop you from listening to it's tale. The actor following the flow of the song gave it life
without verbal communication.

3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjU4Hi9bKa4 = Enjoying the classic Peking Opera

'Drunken Concubine' at Mid-Autumn Festival\
Whilst the singing that I find impressive the tale the song gave is really a tale worth
telling with the performers wearing mesmerizing clothes. The gestures the actor made
gave the show another way to tell a story.
