Abstract

The project proposal titled "From a Pollution to a Solution: An

Eco-Brick Awareness Movement for a Plastic-Free Community" aims to

address the growing issue of plastic pollution in Barangay Pandan,

Lambunao. The implementing organization, in collaboration with local

stakeholders, intends to implement a comprehensive initiative to

promote eco-bricks as an alternative solution to plastic waste. This

project aims to provide our adopted community with the necessary

knowledge and methods that they could use to minimize their plastic

and other wastes. This project also aims to give community leaders an

idea of establishing a Zero Waste-friendly community. Through this,

there would be a sense of longevity to this project. After this

project, we aim to achieve a significantly lessened waste quantity,

observable in the waste collected from the benefiting community.

The primary objective of the project is to create awareness and

educate the community about the importance of eco-bricks and their

role in reducing plastic pollution. This will be achieved through a

series of awareness campaigns, workshops, and educational programs

targeting the resident community. The major project activities include

conducting workshops on eco-brick-making techniques, organizing clean-

up drives to collect plastic waste, establishing collection centers

for eco-bricks, and conducting regular monitoring and evaluation to

track the project's progress. The total project cost is estimated at

20,000 pesos.

Context of the Proposal

A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every

minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an

environmental crisis. Most plastic bottles used for soft drinks and

water are made from polyethylene terephthalate (Pet), which is highly

recyclable (Laville & Taylor, 2017). Plastics are a versatile material

that can be valuable to corporate Green recycling programs. Businesses

can greatly reduce destructive waste output and cut costs associated

with waste management fees through a Green recycling program with

Complete Recycling. The benefit of Complete Recycling is that it can

able to sell materials. Plastics are often recycled to make items such

as clothes, carpets, containers, bottles, plastic lumber, films,

grocery bags, molding materials, and lawn and garden products, to name

a few (Success Stories - Complete Recycling, 2021).

One deep solution for plastic is Eco-bricking, which embodies

regenerative principles that point in a healthy direction. An Eco-

brick is a plastic bottle packed to a set density with used, clean and

dry plastic to achieve a building block that can be used over and over

again. Eco-bricks can also be packed with other non-biological un-

recyclables that, uncontained, are toxic to the environment such as

styrofoam, wires, small batteries, etc. Eco-bricks are designed to

leverage plastic's longevity and durability, creating an indefinitely

reusable, cradle-to-cradle, building block. They are made by cleaning,

drying, and then packing plastic into a PET drinking bottle. Eco-

bricks are an exciting way for individuals, communities, and companies

to immediately transition from plastic towards ever-greener harmony

with the Earth’s cycles (Ecobricks.org & Global Ecobrick Alliance,

2022).

The proposed program is the Eco-brick Training Program for

Barangay Pandan, Lambunao with the theme of "Eco-bricks Enterprise: a

stepping stone for Economic Well-Being" that will help the residents

of the said barangay especially the out-of-school youths and

unemployed residents to form a business organization which can be an

opportunity for them to develop skills in making eco-bricks, running a

business, and earn a living. At the same time, they could also help in

their very own barangay to reduce waste. This project is about forming

a small-scale business where the out-of-school youths and unemployed

residents will be the ones to make the eco-bricks made out of

collected plastic bottles to be filled with sachet wrappers inside as

the raw materials and those eco-bricks will be supplied to the hollow

block builders, residential developers, and furniture makers who have

the greater skill and resources to transform the eco-bricks to a

finished product like various indoor furniture, garden spaces, walls,

and even full-scale buildings. Some members of the participants in the

program will be trained in the running of the business specifically in

the aspects of management, financing, and marketing. This Ecobricks

Training Program will benefit not only the barangay's residents but

also the environment for it can remove plastic from the biosphere and

out of the ineffective industrial recycling system.

Project Justification

The project proposal entitled "From a Pollution to a Solution: An

Eco-Brick Awareness Movement for a Plastic-Free Community" is

justified by the urgent need to address the growing problem of plastic

pollution and promote sustainable waste management practices within

the community. This project aims to raise awareness about the

detrimental effects of plastic waste and empower individuals to take

action by promoting the use of eco-bricks as a practical solution.

Plastics have become a common part of our daily lives, but their

improper disposal and lack of recycling facilities have resulted in

severe environmental consequences. The accumulation of plastic waste

in the community poses a threat to the health and well-being of its

residents, as well as the local ecosystem. The indiscriminate disposal

of plastic waste poses a severe threat to the environment, public

health, and the overall well-being of the community. The accumulation

of plastic waste in rivers, streets, and open spaces not only mars the

natural beauty of the barangay but also contributes to the degradation

of ecosystems and habitats.

The urgency of addressing this problem stems from the fact that

plastic pollution has reached alarming levels and is causing

irreparable damage to the environment. Plastics take hundreds of years

to decompose, leading to long-lasting pollution that affects the land,

water bodies, and wildlife. Immediate action is necessary to prevent

further deterioration of the community's ecosystem and to safeguard

the health of its inhabitants.

By implementing an eco-brick awareness movement, this project

seeks to tackle the issue at its source: the community. The project

will engage community members in educational campaigns, workshops, and

interactive events to educate them about the consequences of plastic

pollution and the benefits of eco-bricks. This awareness-raising

approach will empower individuals to make informed choices and adopt

sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Furthermore, the project "From a Pollution to a Solution: An Eco-

Brick Awareness Movement for a Plastic-Free Community" is justified by

the urgent need to address plastic pollution, promote sustainable

waste management practices, and engage the community in creating a

cleaner and healthier environment. By raising awareness about the

consequences of plastic pollution and promoting eco-bricks as a

practical solution, the project aims to empower individuals and foster

a sense of collective responsibility toward achieving a plastic-free

community.

To maintain the project's good condition and ensure its

effectiveness, several steps can be taken. Firstly, regular

inspections should be conducted to assess the condition of the eco-

brick structures and monitor any signs of deterioration or damage.

Additionally, periodic surveys and interviews can be conducted with

community members to gather feedback and assess their satisfaction

with the initiative. These feedback mechanisms can help identify any

issues or areas for improvement. The progress of the project will be

monitored at regular intervals, such as monthly, through the

collection and analysis of relevant data. This can include the number

of eco-bricks produced, the reduction in plastic waste, and the level

utilize both quantitative and qualitative methods to provide a

comprehensive assessment. The personnel responsible for monitoring and

evaluation will include the barangay captain, kagawad, treasurer, and

SK chairman, who will collaborate to oversee the project's progress

and make informed decisions based on the evaluation results.

Reporting Scheme

Financial reports will be submitted monthly to the barangay

treasurer and project leader, with a summary report submitted

quarterly to the barangay council. Progress reports will be submitted

monthly to the barangay council and project leader, with a

comprehensive report submitted every six months. In addition, the

project leader will provide regular updates to the community through

social media and community meetings. Any changes to the reporting

scheme will be communicated to all stakeholders promptly.
