Social Sciences and the different disciplines.

B. Performance Standards

IV. PROCEDURES

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

 Greetings
 Prayer
 Checking of attendance
A. Review of the previous lesson
About geography sir
So what was our lesson last time?

Very good!
Preliminaries Geography refers to the study
So what is geography? of the earth, place and human
(5 minutes)
as to how they are related to
one another
Correct!

What are the five themes of geography Location, place, region,

movement and human-
Correct! environment interaction
Let’s move on shall we

Are you ready for another learning today? Yes we are ready!

Okay lets proceed then.

Before we start our lesson lets have and

activity first.

This activity is called

“language showcase ”
B.Establishing
a purpose for What I have here is a box containing
the lesson sentences written on papers. Each sentence
is of a different language. Im going to
circulate this box as a play the music. When
the music stops, the one holding the box will
get a paper and read in infront of the class in
a particular tone (angry, sad, sexy, happy
etc. )
DURING THE LESSON
D. Discussing What can u say to our activity? Its fun sir
new concepts
and practicing That’s right its fun.
new skills #1
So today we will discuss another branch of
social science; linguistics

So what we did in our activity has something

to do with linguistics

Based from the activity let us first define

linguistics. Linguistics is the study of
language
Anyone?

Yes that’s right.

Linguistics is a very interesting subject. The

central focus of linguistics is divided together
in the form of components.

There are five components of linguistics.

We have, phonology, morphology, syntax,

semantics and pragmatics

First we have phonology where it refers to

the structure or cognitive aspects of speech
in language on the basis of speech units and
also on pronunciation.

For example. hello. In phonology this word

will be divided into syllables where each
syllable doesn’t have its own meaning.
Its HE and LLO sir.
What syllables does the word Hello consist?

Correct.

Morphology is the study of structure or form

of words in a specific language and also their
classification. It considers the base/root word
where it changes if we put additional letters.

e.g. Love
what do you call if we put an affix at the
beginning of the word? It’s a prefix sir!

Exactly.
If we put a prefix it will change a meaning.
What prefix should we put so that it will have
If we put “IN”
a different meaning?

Correct. That would be INLOVE

Yes sir!
Does it have a different meaning?

What do you call an affix added at the end of It called suffix sir
the root word?

Wow very good!

What suffix should we put on Love so that it If we put “r” sir

changes its meaning?

Yes! It will be read as Lover where it has a

different meaning.

Lets move on to Syntax.

It is the study of arrangement and order of
the words. In short we are talking of the
grammatical structure of sentences.

If syntax is all about grammar we will have

to go through with the parts of speech of
course.
Its noun, pronoun, verb,
Who else can remember the parts of speech adjective, adverb, conjunction
and what are these?
and preposition

Wow very good.

So lets move on with semantics.

Semantics is about the study of meaning

conveyed in the words

In semantics we get to know about the

figures of speech.

What are the basic figures of speech?

Simile, metaphor, hyperbole

Very good. and personification

So lets move on with the last component

which is pragmatics.

It deals with the study of the functions in a

language and also its context to use

e.g. “john has three sons”

in pragmatics, its implication would be that
john has no more than three sons.

AFTER LESSON

Okay, so since everyone has already know

our lesson very well. Get yourself a ¼
sheet of paper and number it to 5 items.
The questions will be about the
components of linguistics

1. it refers to the syllables of a word that

has no meaning
D. Evaluating 2. it refers to the base word that has its
Learning own meaning
3. it refers to the grammatical structures
of sentences
4. it refers to the constructive meaning of
sentences
5. it refers to the functions in a language
and its context to use

In a ½ sheet of paper. Give me one example
