Grammar: Simple past tense

A. To indicate that an action happened， you need to use 了at the end of the
sentence.
Example
w ǒ z u ó tiān w ǎ n shàng k à n diàn s h ì x ī n w é n l e
1. 我 昨 天 晚 上 看 电 视 新 闻 了。
I watched the news on TV last night.
w ǒ d e tóng x u é j ī n tiān z ǎ o shàng t ī z ú qiú l e
2. 我 的 同 学 James 今 天 早 上 踢 足 球 了。
My classmate James played football this morning.

B. To ask whether the action happened or not, you may use any one of the
following three ways:
yǒu méi yǒu
1. use 有 没 有 before the verb,

2. use 了 没 有

3. use 了 吗 at the end of the sentence.

Example：

Did you go to the O2 to see Justin Bieber’s show last week?

C. To indicate that the action did not happen, you need to
méi yǒu l e
use 没 有 before the verb and omit the 了。
Example:
