MODULE IN ENGLISH 8
Third Quarter
Week 1
OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify words or phrases used by the author that show biases
2. Examine biases (for or against) made by the author
• Look for loaded words -words that are charged with emotion (whether positive or
negative) can reveal an author’s opinion about his or her topic.
• Watch out for stereotypes- if the author labels an entire group, the writing is probably
biased
• Notice vague language - if the author isn’t using specific language, this could be an
indicator of bias
• Be on the lookout for one-sided arguments- if the author only presents one side of an
argument, his/her writings is probably biased.
• Does the author present facts or opinions? Facts are what they are – the truth. But
opinions can be based on feelings, emotions, or prejudices, which are not objective.
Example:
When I met Congressman Joey of Albay, I noticed that he had the appearance of a poor
and a provincial man(loaded words). He was wearing old and torn clothes(one sided-notice that
the author does not tell us why the Congressman was dressed this way). He talked to me about
his horrible projection our province(vague language-what specifically is horrible about it). I could
tell that his project will provide great opportunities to us(Opinion-no supporting evidence).Helps
to hire many unemployed Bicolanos over the next two years. I do not want to be boastful to
anyone, but the Congressman is a Bicolano, and we are known for being oragon or “a person of
excellence.” (This is clearly a stereotype). The author shows bias in favor of the Congressman.
Task 1. Read the following statements from various authors of different articles. Identify if the
author is for or against based on the words or phrases used that show biases.
Task 3. Read the letter to a local newspaper in which the writer argues that the Playground
Park should not be turned into a Basketball Court. Encircle all the “negative words” that are
used to influence the reader.
Residents living near the playground park are alarmed at the plan to change the favorite place
of the kids into a basketball court. If this malicious plan is carried out, the lovely trees in the
park will be chopped down. Values of the property within the area will drop sharply as the park
fills with the filth and debris of the bulldozers and other equipment. Obviously, no one cares
about the enjoyment of the poor kids in this place.
Task 4. Examine biases in the paragraph and answer the question below.
An independent insurance agent works directly for you, not for a large, anonymous
organization. The agent must provide you with the best policy at the lowest price if he is to
remain in business. The agent’s job is to help you find a policy that suits your needs. This
may cover your life, health, home, or automobile. Independent insurance agents are free to
recommend the best policy, regardless of which insurance company provides it.
Task 5. Read the article and list down 4 biases made by the author and tell whether if the
authors against or in favor of the Korean Dramas. Write your answers on the blanks below.
