Polar or non-polar

Why doeshas
Water water havebonds
polar polar bonds?
due to the unequal sharing of electrons between the
hydrogen and oxygen atoms due to hydrogen having a positive charge and
oxygen having a negative charge.

What does it mean if something is polar? What does it mean if something is non-polar?
If something is polar, it means there is an unequal sharing of electrons. If something is
non-polar, the sharing of electrons are equal and even.

What makes water a polar molecule? (Use a diagram to show this)

+ +

What are the two criteria that are required for something to be polar?

1. The individual bond moments must not cancel one another.

2. The molecule must have a net dipole of 0.
not

Draw a flowchart to show how you would determine whether something is polar or non-polar.

Is the bond non-polar?

Are atoms identical?

Are there no lone pairs?

Is molecule linear/planar?

Polar
Use the table of electronegativities AND the molecular shapes (by drawing Lewis Dot Diagrams) to
work out which molecules below are polar.

a) HCl e) BF3

b) CH4 f) CO2

c) NH3 g) H2S

d) H2O h) O2
