Modeling Molecules Activity

1. The elements in the kit are colour-coded. Record the name and colour of each element.

2. Use the “atoms” and “bonds” provided to build a model of each combination of elements listed
in the table below. The molecule is complete when all the bond holes are full. Note that you can
only use ONE atom under the column called “Element 1”. However, you can use as many atoms
of “Element 2” as are needed.

3. Count the number of atoms for each element in you model. Sketch each molecule and write its
chemical formula in your chart. Each bond is represented as a line in between the symbols.

molecules, and sketch them below. How are their structures different?

b) Propane (C3H8) is a fuel that is commonly used for heating homes. Use your materials to build a
model of a propane molecule.
