III Materials

IV Procedure
A. Preparation
 Greetings
 Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
 Setting the class mode and environment
 Checking of prior knowledge

B. Motivation
The teacher will flash set of cards. As the teacher flashes each card, the students
needs to perform the indicated operation mentally.

23 + 32 = 59 – 37 = 315 – 219 = 305 – 124 =

75 + 15 = 124 + 256 = 128 + 136 = 213 + 132 =

450 + 150 = 322 – 322 = 784 – 243 = 423 – 320 =

C. Motive Question
The teacher will ask the students the following questions:
1. How did you solve the above exercises? Did you apply any techniques or shortcut?
2. Were you able to answer all the exercises quickly and accurately?
3. Did you find difficulty in doing the activity?

D. Lesson Proper / Presentation

After the students answer the motive question, the teacher will present the lesson
about Absolute Value, and Addition and Subtraction of Integers
Integers
The integers consist of positive and negative number, and zero (0). The integers
are represented on the number line.

Counting numbers, also called natural numbers, are represented to the right of
zero if the line is placed horizontally or above, if the line is placed vertically. These
numbers are greater than zero and written with or without (+) sign. Their value increases
as numbers move farther from zero.
The negative numbers are placed to the left of zero if the line is placed
horizontally or above, if the line is placed vertically. These numbers are less than zero
and written with (-) sign. Their value decreases as numbers move farther from zero.
Zero is neither positive nor negative, it has no sign, and it is placed as the middle
of the number line.
The (+) and (–) are symbols used to indicate addition and subtraction, but in
number line, they indicate the direction of a point from the 0-point, not as operations to
be performed. In the number line, (+) and (–) are used as signs of directions. Thus
read +2 “as positive 2” not “plus 2”
read –2 as “negative 2” not “minus 2”
A number line is a line drawn starting from zero and which extends to both sides
without ends. This means that there are infinitely many numbers on both sides from the
origin of the number line.
Absolute Value
The absolute value of x, denoted by “|x|” (and which is read as “the absolute
value of x”), is the distance of x from z, so the absolute value of any number is a non-
negative number.
Examples:
1. |-5| = 5 and |5| = 5
2. |3| = 3 and |-3| = 3
 Opposite integers have the same absolute value since they have the same distance
from 0.
 Absolute value of an integer is always positive because there is no negative distance.
 Absolute value is denoted by | |.
 The absolute value of 0 is 0.
Addition of Integers
1. Addition of both positive or both negative integers.
 In adding both positive integers, add the absolute value of each number and
write + sign before the answer.
 In adding both negative integers, add the absolute value of each number and
write – sign before the answer.
2. Adding numbers with different signs.
 In adding numbers with different signs, subtract the absolute value of the
numbers and follow the sign of the bigger number.
Examples:
1. 2+3=5
2. (-2) + (-3) = -5
3. (-2) + 3 = 1
4. 2 + (-3) = -1
Subtraction of Integers
In subtracting integers, change the sign of the subtrahend and proceed to addition
of integers.
Examples:
1. 2-3= 2 + (-3) = -1
2. (-2) - (-3) = (-2) + 3 = 1
3. (-2) - 3 = (-2) + (-3) = -5
4. 2 - (-3) = 2+3= 5

E. Generalization / Application
I. Supply the paragraphs with the missing word/s. Write the answer in your
Mathematics notebook.
II. Add the given integers. Write the letter that corresponds to the answer in the
appropriate box.

III. Subtract the given integers. Write the letter that corresponds to the answer in the
appropriate box.
F. Evaluation
In a one whole sheet of paper, the students will answer the following.
I. Write the absolute value of the following expressions.
1. |-16| = ___
2. |-24| = ___
3. |18| = ___
4. |35| = ___
5. |0| = ___
II. Add the following:
1. (9) + (2) = ___
2. (-14) + (17) = ___
3. (18) + (-11) + (3) = ___
4. (-9) + (-19) + (-6) = ___
5. 547 + (-250) + 257 + (-274) + 195 = ___
III. Subtract the following:
6. (9) - (2) = ___
7. (-14) - (17) = ___
8. (18) - (-11) - (3) = ___
9. (-9) - (-19) - (-6) = ___
10. 547 - (-250) - 257 - (-274) - 195 = ___
