 My name is Anesutenzi P Munyangiri.

I am here to present on trees and flowers we grow

at our nursery garden at Mkoba Teachers College. We grow a lot of plants that include

Lavender, mangoes, pawpaw, lemons, oranges etc. My main focus is going to be on how

to plant and maintain lavender. And then I will continue to give a brief presentation on

how to plant and maintain pawpaws and lemons.

 Lavender

 It’s a plant that produce gray-green leaves that are packed with a refreshing, sweet-herbal scent.

 It opens purple blooms in most cases and some have pink or white flowers

 Planting and maintaining lavender

 Growing lavender starts with planting lavender well

 It need sun to thrive. It can take up to 6 hours of direct sun

 We usually plant it in summer because its growth is faster and in winter is slow

 It can also grow in doors in a pot.

 Soil prep
 Needs soil that drains well and is slightly alkaline

 Drainage is vital because lavender plants often die from root rot due to soggy soil.

 Soil that tends to hold water in winter can kill lavender quickly

 Enhance drainage by raising soil mounds by 2 to 24 inches from the ground

 Mix sand and limestone fines into the soil to enhance drainage

 When planting lavender give enough room to accommodate flowers.

 It needs good air circulation to grow to its best.

 Starting from seed

 Is grown from cuttings

 Growing from seeds is difficult but not impossible

 Sow the seeds on your pot and barely cover them because they need sunlight to germinate.

 Can take as long as a month to germinate and sometimes takes 14 days

 Help germination process by placing seeds tray in a warm spot: 70 degrees is an ideal temperature

 Some garderners refrigerate seeds in a sealed plastic bag for 21 days to prepare them for sprouting and help improve

germination

 Transfer seedling to 2inch wide pots when seedling have sprouted several sets of leaves.

 Lavender is a slow growing plant can take up to three months to reach transplanting size
Pawpaw

Grow best in areas with a lots of sunlight and need above average rainfall

Irrigation may be necessary

Is grow from fresh or dry seeds, which are sown either in a container or directly into the ground

At mkoba teachers college we saw that the are few suppliers of pawpaw seeds so that we take that into our own advantage to

plant pawpaws and sell them to the community and the returns we channel them to develop our nursery

Lemons

Requires deep soil that have good surface and internal drainage

Planting depth provides roots to have access to water

Watering should be done two or three times the first week and 1 to 2 for the next few weeks

Do not apply fertilizer until the tree begins new growth after planting

Make sure the place is free from weeds

Clay soils must be used when planting cause it contains more nutrients
